“Disinterested staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2007

The approach to the Villa holds promise, but the "welcome" we received on arrival was disinterested to say the least. After waiting a while at reception, someone grudgingly came from the back room, took our details without so much as a greeting, before he was joined by another equally disdainful staff member, who threw us our keys without an explanation as to where the room might be found, waved vaguely in the direction of the adjoining road saying "the pool is there" and wandered off. In all the times that we saw staff in the hotel, not once did they greet or acknowledge us - and we passed the same manager (general manager or F&B manager) twice.

Rooms are OK although on the small side, grounds are unkept and need a good rake and trim and all the fountains are inexplicably without water. Our impression is that the Villa - and staff - both suffer from delusions of grandeur.

“Great location, great building but . . . . . .”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2007

This is a great looking building situated in the hills south of Rome and relatively close to Ciampino Airport. The rural setting is quiet and the grounds and buildings look fantastic. I stayed in rooms situated in outbuildings away from the main Villa and they were really simply furnished and nice but a few things could have been better.

TV remote control was broken and only worked intermittently. TV channel choice was also surprisingly limited with CNN being the only English Channel available - no BBC World - a surprising ommission. The air conditioning control in my room also made loud clicking sounds but at least was work (perhaps even worked too well!),

The bath stopper is operated by one of those knobs at the end of the bath but the plastic assembly was broken and it was impossible to get the bath stopped to engage. I had to use toilet paper to stop up the bathplug in order to run a bath. The shower was powerful and with good control over temperature, but it also dumped a lot of water onto the adjacent toilet seat due to the lack of a wrap-around curtain.

The enamel bath itself had a few dents that had been badly touched up with paint and the rubber shower mat had lots of fungal growth on the bottom side that fell into the bath when I lifted it out.

Main building is beautiful with wonderful paintings inside apparently still under restoration. Views north towards Rome were great.

Service seemed quite poor at reception on arrival - the receptionist somehow failed to see me waving at her and continued bashing away on her PC until I was forced to "ding the bell". I arrived late one evening (1:30am) and found both gates closed. It took several minutes of ringing to attract the attention of a member of staff - thankfully it was not raining.

Car parking - there are a few reserved spaces on the site but main parking is down the hill a bit and is not protected. However the area appears quiet and no signs of broken glass which is common in Britain for example.

As another reviewer has said, Breakfast was very limited with some "own brand" round corn flakes on offer rather than the standard Kellogs type you would normally expect. Limited hot food, more like a better buffet in a Novotel than somewhere that holds itself to be a really classy hotel.

Dinner service one evening also appeared pretty slow - even with relatively few people staying.

A colleague also complained that she had no hot water in her bedroom on one of the mornings. That is not acceptable.

Overall, a nice place but far from Rome and service

“Hotel is fine but watch out for rip off taxis”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2006

Istayed in the hotel for 4 nights and it's absolutely fine. I had no problems with any of the staff and I found the reception quite helpful.

Free umbrellas were provided by teh hotel when it rained.

Breakfast was courteously served by a friendly waiter. Howvere the brakfast had a limited selection, cereal, croissants, bread, ham and orange juice/cranberry juice (ex carton).

Room was cleaned daily and to a good standard.

The hotel is near the Villa Borghese and is out of the centre of Rome, but within walking distance of anywhere e.g. I walked to the Vatican, I walked to the Forum (few hours).

The biggest problem I had involved the taxi from the Termini to teh hotel - the fare should have been about €6 but I was charged €32, a colleague €25, another colleague €49 - all but the last being on a meter.

The correct approach is to ask the hotel in adavnce what teh taxi fare is likely to be and then show this not to the taxi driver!

Whenn I complained to tourist officials at the airport they siaid they had been doing customer survsy fro the last 3 years and opproblems with taxis always featured but nothing was ever done about them - and from the tone of voice and look he suggested that he considered my belief that something should be done as incredibly naive

  • Liked — I got a corporate rate
  • Disliked — Hotel was away from teh centre
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask hotel what price of taxi should be from station to hotel

“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2006

I have read previous views of this hotel and am a little surprised. I went with 5 other people, in three different rooms, all very clean. Hotel staff absolutely brilliant (especially marco). Nice breakfast.
Number 53 bus stops outside hotel to take you into centre of rome at one euro a go.
Would recommend and would certainly stay there again.

“Glad to be out of there....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2005

Checked in to a room the size of a closet on a very busy and noisy street. It was as hot and stuffy as there was no ventilation. The desk clerk refused to turn on the air conditioning saying it was too cold to use it. Finally he gave in and turned it on. It was turned off at 5am when we were forced to open the window, only to lay there and listen to the street noise and be asphixiated by the car fumes. The bed was made from left over marble that Michelangelo rejected for sculptures. The room was so small we could not pass one another. We asked the desk clerk why the room was so small and we were told it was a standard room. Asked what it rented for the clerk said he did not know...then told us it was 220 a night. We complained to him that it was not what was pictured on Expedia. The hotel finally moved us to a hotel down the steet that they also owned. The Hotel Buenos Aries was right around the corner, so we packed and moved to a very spacious room with two windows that could be opened for ventilation on a very quiet street. Vacationing in Rome is exhusting so I would not recommend a hotel like Villa Grazioli as it is not a place to relax and get a good nights sleep.
