My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights at this hotel in November ‘10 with a booking through Travel Republic. We were given a room on the second floor overlooking the alley to the left of the hotel. The room was very clean and tidy with a good size bathroom, although there was a slight ‘drain’ smell on occasion. We had no problem with noise during our stay. The continental breakfast was excellent with a good range of items. The best thing about the hotel is it’s location, 25min walk from the Vatican and 20 min from the Colosseum. The worst thing is the centrally controlled air-con. On our first night, the weather was wet and humid which meant the room was too. We asked for the air-con to be turned on and were promised that it would be, but it wasn’t. Fortunately, for the rest of the visit, the weather was dry and sunny so we did not require the air-con. Overall it’s a good hotel with an excellent location to visit all the sights in Rome.
How to get there
Our flight was with easyJet to Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumincino) airport. From there, take the Lombardi express train to the Stazione Termini which takes about 20 mins and should cost 14 Euro’s each, one way. On leaving the train BEAR RIGHT and walk about 15 mins down Plat 20 ( I think) until you come to the main concourse and ticket area. Head towards the bus station and catch either the no 40 or the no 60, we got the no 40. You must buy your bus ticket before you board or you might have to pay a 60 Euro fine. We used the quick fares ticket machine and paid 4 euros each, however, if you find a Tobacconists, it should only be 1 euro each. You are supposed to verify your ticket on a machine on board the bus, but they are very crowded 24/7 so don’t worry ( it states on the ticket that you have 45 mins to verify your ticket from boarding). The bus stop to return to the airport is directly outside the hotel front door, BUT the one you need to get off at on arrival is the stop where you have Temple ruins on your left ( Area Sacra) and a bookstore on your right with bright red signage and a road sign that says Largo di Torre Argentina. The hotel is on the corner opposite.
Where to eat
The restaurant next door to the hotel, Rossopomodoro, is good quality and reasonably priced, just right after a long journey.
Taverna Antonina
Recommended by another Della Torre visitor on this site, excellent food but expensive, near the Column of Victory.
Vinallegro
Recommended by our Angel’s tour guide, good food and a very extensive wine list, the entire restaurant is covered in un-drunk bottles from floor to ceiling, located in Trastevere, off via Renella in a small Piazza.
Angelino Ai Fori
Our personal favourite. Good food and good prices, with a waiter that said ’Oh Yes’ to everything that you said. Located at the junction between Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Cavour, opposite the forum of Augusto.
Taberna Patricii et Plebei
Did not eat here, just drinks, but the restaurant has a fantastic ceiling, located near the Trevi fountain on Via del Lavatore(!)
Il Delfino
Not a restaurant, but a café. The cheapest we found in Rome for coffee, opposite the hotel!
One to avoid
Although we received excellent service in all the restaurants and cafes we went to, there is always one to spoil it. This one is the café on the upper level of the Colosseum metro stop. Poor service, rude staff and expensive fare.
And lastly
We went on three tours with Angel Tours in Rome. Please use Trip Advisor to check reviews.
Enjoy!
