“Very good hotel, excellent location, tight rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2011

This is a very good hotel. Staff is very helpful all the time and even like to talk to you even if you do not speak Italian.

The location is excellent. It is simply aside Saint Peter's Church in the Vatican City. Rome does not have a good subway (it is very dirt and covers only a small fraction of the city), but the hotel is reasonably near subway and train stations. It also has a lot of bus lines that reach all parts of the city nearby. And you can easily go to downtown and historic sites by foot. As Rome is a lovely city to walk around, this matched to our purposes during the visitation.

Rooms a little bit tight. They are really tighter if you book a French bed room. We did know Frech bed was so narrow and we did change to a Junior Suite the second night of our stay. The staff provided us the solution with no problem with a small and reasonable additional charge. Even so, the other room was a little bit tight if you have big cases.

We had a small problem with the water temperature. It oscilated and we had to be a little bit patient until its temperature stabilized. But this was not annoying to such a point of not recommending Paolo VI. It is still a good hotel.

The breakfast is North-American style and is very good. I recommend it.

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2011

Stayed here for two nights recently. The hotel is on the upper levels of a shared building which is very quiet. There's enough signage to guide you through, but not really a great presence in the downstairs area.
Staff were very pleasant and all spoke English thankfully (since I didn't know much Italian).
People have commented that the rooms are small, which is true, however it was rather adequate. There was a big enough bed, a small desk and average bathroom facilities. Having been an old monastery, it was just enough for one person. The bathroom was clean, but the rug in the bedroom was a little bit tired.
Breakfast was a self-service buffet included in the price, and had the usual fare of continental, and some eggs and bacon in a chaffing dish.
From the front door, it's only a few steps away from the Vatican, so the location is excellent.
One let down was the hotel restaurant was only open for breakfast during the quiet season (winter) so you'll need to find somewhere else around the area for dinner if you're going off-peak.

“Perfect location, very pleasant hotel & staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2011

This hotel is perfectly located as it is close to St. Peter's Square. I counted my steps from the gate of this hotel to the closest pillar in St. Peter's Square, it took me 20 steps and I have short legs, this would be less for someone with bigger steps. There is a lovely rooftop garden that is open from 4pm until midnight where you can have a drink and take in the view of St. Peter's Basilica and the Pope's chambers.

The ambiance of the hotel is charming, calming and does not feel like a hotel at all. There is no hustle and bustle of luggages & tourists. When you enter the lift and get to reception you feel that you have entered a quiet realm like that of a museum but then you hear beautiful classical music playing through the sound system and are warmly greeted by friendly reception staff.

This hotel is worth staying at if you are interested in being at the doorstep of St. Peter's basilica. If you want a quiet and extremely clean place to stay without ever bumping into more than 3 hotel guests at once then this is the place to stay. The hotel also provides free internet with a laptop to use. The buffet breakfast is located on the top floor in the Bernini room which is tastefully decorated.

“Unbelievable location right next to the Vatican”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

Terrific place to stay if you want to spend time at the Vatican. Very quiet location. Rooms were very small...even by Europe standards. Shower was extremely small. Wifi was just OK. Excellent breakfast.

“Location, Location, Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2010

My husband and I enjoyed our first trip to Rome as we arrived on Oct. 22, 2010. We were fortunate to stay at the Residenza.

Not only is Residenza Paolo VI right across the street from Vatican Square, but guests may view the lighted Square at night from a convenient, charming balcony. Although we were told that "dinner" was not served at the hotel, we were served tapas, an entree, and dessert along with wine and incredible coffee. Breakfast was the most delightful array of treats. Both were served by friendly staff in a warm, inviting environment. Helping to arrange with directions, tours, and other requests, the staff was welcoming, fluent in multiple languages, and efficient.

If you wish to see the Vatican, this is the place to stay! Walk out your door, across one side street, and enter the square! What an incredible find Residenza Paolo VI was!!!!!!
