“It Scared Me...”

I had to sleep one night at Rome, before taking my flight back to Argentina. For me, that was travelling alone, it was a bit strange. For one side, it was good enough, because I only wanted to sleep, and leave the baggage a few hours during the day to go for a walk on Rome. But I have to say it's so awful, dirty, and disordered. I was in a floor were there are the private rooms, and there were bkoken furnitures on the corridors, the walls with water stains, the baskets with towels in the middle of the corridors, the floor was dirty, without windows, without fresh air... I felt I was staying on a garage. And I was alone in all the floor. It scared. For almost 40 euro (single private room, without bathroom) I expected more than a garage... And in the room it was a paper, on the windows, that said: "During the night, please close all the windows". I felt scared.. I don't know what it meant. Nobody explained to me. As I was alone, I would have liked to feel more secure. I don't recommend it. Al least you don't mind paying for sleeping in a garage.

“Downmarket hostel-style hotel: very basic but passable for one night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

I didn't actually choose Fawlty Towers but got booked in there after a complication with a booking at another hostel. I ended up paying €25 for a bed in a 3-bed room with ensuite bathroom on the 6th floor of the reception building on Via Magenta 39 (speaking to another guest who had trekked over from a nearby building to use the kitchen, it seems like there may be rooms spread around other locations).

For an odd night it was OK; the room was reasonably clean though sparsely furnished. The bathroom smelled a bit damp and wasn't terribly clean, but it also wasn't filthy - so, passable if you're not too fussy. Room had air conditioning which was fine if a bit noisy. Location is convenient, by the train station with a short walk to central attractions like the Colosseum.

There's a pleasant if small common room with a small kitchen and a PC for free Internet access. The kitchen is VERY basic with basically only a microwave and coffee maker, and very few plates/cutlery. There's a small roof terrace outside to sit and eat your breakfast. When I stayed, there technically wasn't any breakfast included but they did provide a croissant and coffee.

Based on my experience, if you're a single traveller expecting a downmarket hostel and get it for a cheap rate, it's fine for an odd night, but I wouldn't recommend it for much more.

“Dingy room but good location near train station”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2010

I was disappointed - Rick Steves' book recommended it, but I wonder if he actually stayed here. An old dingy room, however the sheets and towels seemed clean. However, the bathrooms leaked water whenever anyone took a shower so the bathrooms were often wet and not fun to walk around in. Had some trouble sleeping because the doors and heavy and whenever anyone closes a door, it's quite loud and I had alot of trouble sleeping the first night because of this. Also, like most hostels, there are alot of young people staying there who like to stay out late, so you'll be hearing doors banging until around 12 or 1 a.m. The outdoor patio wasn't bad to sit and relax with a drink. Kitchen was small and really hot and sunny when the direct sun would come in the morning. Free internet access which was nice. It's well-located only 2 blocks from the Termini train station. However, I wouldn't stay here again.

“Never, never, never think of staying here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2010

I can't believe a place like this exists. It was one of the WORST places I have ever seen for tourists. I can't believe the Rough Guide listed it, I will be putting in a complaint. If you want to save money, trust me, there are other places out there for the same or cheaper price. The shower ceiling was rotted and moldy, the walls were dirty. The blankets and sheets seemed like they hadn't been washed in ages. Everything smelled BAD. The ONLY good thing was we got our money back. Do NOT stay here.

“Horrible place!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2010

We got to Rome by train and this thing that some people call hotel was easy to find: it´s just across Termini Station (and believe me this is the only good thing about Fawlty Towers). They start with asking the full payment in advance (never happened to me) and when you get to the room it´s the big disapoitment: everything that you read on the previous revues is even worst. A true nigthmare! If you want to ruin your vacations, this is the perfect place to stay: you only have to get to the so called "room"! To bad to be true!!!!
