“Terrible Place to Stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2006

I couldn't agree more with the first review, "Book here if you like cold showers."

We reserved two rooms about a month prior to visiting Rome for vacation. Traveling in group of 8 (4 adults and 4 children).

When we dialed the number, we got an english speaking person who was great to work with. He answered questions and arranged airport shuttle to pick us up at the airport. Upon our arrival to the Tourist House, there wasn't any sign on the building etc...just a small business card next to the 'bell buttons'... --> Good luck finding this place in the dark without guidence.

Once we figured out the lift and got to the floor we were greeted by an individual (described in the first review) who did not speak English -- he attempted to be very helpful...but really couldn't verbally answer any of our questions...

The rooms were very, very, very, very small and 'gross'... The ceilings had black stuff growing on them... The beds were extremely uncomfortable and the windows were not sound proof. The rooms did have A/C; however, they drained directly into the shower. My daughter walked from one room to another {almost across the hall}--the bottom of her feet were completely black...

The bathrooms were very, very small and described to detail in the first review. The shower was so small you could not move around to wash yourself without hitting the shower doors (too small for my 9 year old more less an adult). Speaking of shower doors, they were cheap plastic that were cracked, soap scummed. Water was a mix of hot -- my wife's shower was more cold... One door had about 4-7 inches of scotch tape holding it to the rails; the other kept falling off.... The tank above the tolet leaked... The ceiling had black stuff growing on it too...
Breakfast was described perfectly in the first review.... I have traveled in Europe for 3-years now -- definetely not the 'typical European breakfast'.....

After experiencing a terrible night (we arrived around 12 am and was pretty much committed to staying the first night -- didn't want to be 'homeless' in Rome at midnight with 4 children), we decided to check out... Early the next morning, we found a very nice hotel right next to the Tourist House {Via Cavour 213-M }
for almost the same prices (granted they gave us Space-A price). We approaced the non-speaking English man (who was barefoot) to check out. He called the English Speaking individual who insisted that his rooms were very nice and that since we reserved 3 nights we had to pay for 3 nights--was charged for only 2 nights (remember though, was paying for two different rooms; both rooms, same quality). Lesson for tourists, don't reserve multiple nights in advance if not completely sure you will be satisfied....

“Great value, good location”

Good location just a couple of blocks from the Forum and Colosseum. The rooms are nothing to write home about, but are excellent for groups looking for value. We travelled as a family (5 people) and stayed in one room with 5 beds, which ran us €160 per night--an incredible value. Meager breakfast in the morning, but that's just a good excuse to find a nice cafe to eat in. Unlike the other reviewer, we had plenty of hot water, enough for all five of us to shower without problems.

“Great place”

I totally disagree with the other review. The location of Tourist House (Via Cavour) was pretty much perfect. You could walk to just about everything, except the Vatican. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area. Plus the Colosseum and Roman Forum are 3 minutes away.
The owner of the place was really helpful, we even got a discount because we payed in cash, but you can pay with your creditcard as well.
The rooms are lovely, they look exactly like they do on the website. They're spacious with AC, although the bathroom is a bit small, and they clean the room every day. They also give you the key to the apartment buidling, the apartment itself and your room so you can come and go as you like.
Also, there is a computer with internet that you are free to use as much as you want to!

About the cold water.. Yes, the apartment building is being renovated but we never once had cold water. It's located on the fifth floor but don't worry, there is an elevator.
The breakfast is a very typical european breakfast. This kind of breakfast is what you're gonna get in pretty much all regions of Europe. That's just how it is.
We had such a pleasant stay at this place, I'd defintely stay here again without a doubt.

“Book here if you like cold showers.”

This is a B&B located in an apartment building in central Rome. It does not look anything like the pictures.

We reserved a spot at the Tourist House months before our cruise and arrived there with another couple for a one night stay before beginning our cruise. The plan was to return to the Tourist House after our cruise, also, so that we could tour Rome for a couple of days before returning home. Upon our arrival, our friends' room was ready. Ours was still occupied and we were rerouted to another B&B at 58 Via Cavour and had an enjoyable stay in a clean and comfortable environment.

Our friends, however, awoke the next morning to a cold shower. They were told there were some repairs being made by the city to their water supply. The rest of the building had hot water!

When we arrived at the Tourist House after our 12 day cruise, the hot water was still not working. Animated emergency calls were being made in, our presence, for a new element for the water tank but in the end nothing ever materialized. Our room was absolutely basic. The carpets were old and dirty. The young man who made up our beds padded around in bare feet and looked like he had not bathed in days. Our bathroom was laughable. The shower floor was cracked and the caulking around it was yellow and black. One had to sit on the toilet at a 45 degree angle because the wall in front of the toilet was on an angle and only inches away from the front of the toilet, narrowing so that one's left leg had no place to go.

The breakfast area ( hah!) was an old table about 2 feet deep by 4 feet wide, next to the front door, with a coffee maker and packaged croissants not even placed in a basket.

We did not receive any break on the one night we spent there. The place at 58 Via Cavour was booked so we paid our fee and were fortunate to find a lovely delightful place nearby for 10 Euros more per night.
