“Orange Grove Apartments by Spagna and Popolo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2009

Caesar's Accommodation http://www.ilcastello.com/

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION these apartments are in between Piazze Spagna and Piazza del Popolo, right by Via del Baubino and Margutta- where Gregory Peck stayed in Roman holiday. Everything is at your doorstep -- shop on Via Del Corso or condotti, hang by the Spanish steps, walking to every major monument: the Pantheon, Fontana de Trevi, Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori

My husband and I were in Roma for a week in December 2008. While this was my 5th or 6th visit to Rome and being so central made it one of my best.

The ilcastello team was very professional, from the time we booked over email, they responded immeidately to my various inquiries before the trip, supplied complete information about getting to the apartment, what we needed, contact numbers etc

We were even able to walk to Il Vaticano to attend Xmas eve mass inside St Peter's Basilica and but we are big walkers.

You have a choice of Metro stops - Popolo or Piazza Spagna-- the Metro Roma is the easiest uncrowded and clean metro system . There is a medium sized proper grocery complete with everything very near where you can get the best prosciutto and bread, pizza stands and gelato places a few seconds away.

When you live so centrally Rome is easy, it makes sense you enjoy every moment and everything. Drop your shopping bags back and cook lunch in the apartment if you want to save on eating in a restaurant, and you are still right in the centro storico ready to explore the next site or ruin no time is wasted

The owners and maintenance/concierge took good care of us, would check up on us. Strongly reccommend you book the car and driver too for airport pick-up, really great service and you don't have to worry

I also booked a room online and had everything confirmed prior to leaving only to get there and find my room had been double booked. To be honest it was a blessing because the web site advertising the hotel is a work of creativity to say the least. I met 2 other couples in the hotel I was moved to and they had also been relocated from the Il Castello. The hotel I was moved to was just as bad and was told I couldn't have the room for more than a couple of nights so I left and booked one through the hotel booking office at the train station they were very helpful and got me a great room in a 3 star hotel at only 20 euros extra, it was worth it.

“IT HAPPENED TO US AS WELL!”

Are you ready for this....I swear I am not normally one to complain....Prior to leaving home I reconfirmed all accommodation a couple of times [just in case]. We also booked a room with balcony & private bathroom. We booked 8/9 months prior to visit. After reading comments in TripAdvisor [which still didn't put us off!] I thought it wise to again confirm with Il Castello and was informed at this time that we were never getting a balcony [even though earlier they had confirmed this]...that's fine as long as we had a room. We arrive in Rome after a long journey, get to the hotel to be told there was a water problem in our room so they would order us a taxi to take us to another hotel around the corner. A staff member speaks to the driver and off we go...the driver can't find the hotel. He's walking up and down the block trying to find the hotel, all the while the meter is running...we don't speak Italian so this caused a real problem..we finally get through to him that we want to go back to Il Castello. Get back there and explain that the driver can not find the hotel..the staff member again gives directions to the driver. The driver takes us to what was obviously the ghetto part of Rome and drops us off outside some place.. we didn't want to get out but the driver was annoyed by now. This guy shows us into what was obviously an apartment across the road..this place was covered in security bars more resemblance of a prison and definitely not our idea of spending great days in Rome! We didn't know where the heck we were and I was starting to get a bit apprehensive. My husband finally got through to someone to phone us a taxi which finally arrived and off we went to the closest big hotel we could find. As we couldn't afford this hotel we had to phone Il Castello again as they spoke English and ask for some help in locating a hotel. Finally someone picked us up and took us to the hotel we were originally meant to be. You would never pick it was a hotel as there is absolutely no signage, nothing and it was locked anyway, you needed a key to get in. We couldn't appreciate the hotel/b&b we were placed in at first as we were just shattered by our flight and unplanned nightmare excursion around rome. It turns out the B&B is owned by the same people. They would not accept credit cards, it was cash only. It was a nightmare start to our holiday... we got over it and enjoyed the sights in Rome but I feel it would've been so much more enjoyable if it had of started out right. Seriously take your time when choosing the right hotel for a visit to Rome!

“Second Warning!! This Hotel also resold our Room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2003

Arrived at Hotel IL Castello at 7.00p.m to be told that they had sold our room to someone else that day and that one of the staff would take us by taxi to another hotel a few blocks away. I had booked this double room for a total of 7 nights with balcony overlooking the garden and private bathroom 3 months in advance and now we were whisked awy to another hotel for 4 of the 7 nights with a private batroom that turned out to be in fact down the hall from our bedroom and not ensuite at all!! As you can you imagine we are not happy with Hotel Il Castello and will not be recommending it to our friends! We in all spent 3 nights at Hotel Il Castello so they had sold our room to someone else for 4 of the 7 nights we were to have it In the end it did not have the balcony I had paid for but did have an ensuite. We would never stay there again,The sheets were not changed once in the 3 days we were there. Next time if we ever go to Rome we will be staying at an Ibis Hotel. At least there you are insured quality and comfort and loyalty to their customers!!!!!!!!

“No frills but comfy”

A no frills hostel/hotel but very central - two stops away on the underground from the main station. Lovely staff - very helpful - all staff were either Irish or Italian! Rooms are simple but sufficient and comfortable - bed, side lockers, table - better to request a room with a shower..worth it for the €20 extra. Excellent security. Drinks available for very cheap prices and breakfast is lovely for €3.
