Are you ready for this....I swear I am not normally one to complain....Prior to leaving home I reconfirmed all accommodation a couple of times [just in case]. We also booked a room with balcony & private bathroom. We booked 8/9 months prior to visit. After reading comments in TripAdvisor [which still didn't put us off!] I thought it wise to again confirm with Il Castello and was informed at this time that we were never getting a balcony [even though earlier they had confirmed this]...that's fine as long as we had a room. We arrive in Rome after a long journey, get to the hotel to be told there was a water problem in our room so they would order us a taxi to take us to another hotel around the corner. A staff member speaks to the driver and off we go...the driver can't find the hotel. He's walking up and down the block trying to find the hotel, all the while the meter is running...we don't speak Italian so this caused a real problem..we finally get through to him that we want to go back to Il Castello. Get back there and explain that the driver can not find the hotel..the staff member again gives directions to the driver. The driver takes us to what was obviously the ghetto part of Rome and drops us off outside some place.. we didn't want to get out but the driver was annoyed by now. This guy shows us into what was obviously an apartment across the road..this place was covered in security bars more resemblance of a prison and definitely not our idea of spending great days in Rome! We didn't know where the heck we were and I was starting to get a bit apprehensive. My husband finally got through to someone to phone us a taxi which finally arrived and off we went to the closest big hotel we could find. As we couldn't afford this hotel we had to phone Il Castello again as they spoke English and ask for some help in locating a hotel. Finally someone picked us up and took us to the hotel we were originally meant to be. You would never pick it was a hotel as there is absolutely no signage, nothing and it was locked anyway, you needed a key to get in. We couldn't appreciate the hotel/b&b we were placed in at first as we were just shattered by our flight and unplanned nightmare excursion around rome. It turns out the B&B is owned by the same people. They would not accept credit cards, it was cash only. It was a nightmare start to our holiday... we got over it and enjoyed the sights in Rome but I feel it would've been so much more enjoyable if it had of started out right. Seriously take your time when choosing the right hotel for a visit to Rome!
