“Perfect for what we wanted”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We had room 34, which looked out onto the street below. The room was massive: you could have fit a dining room table in there as well as the large bed. We received a free bottle of wine on arrival, which was the perfect touch. The bathroom is a bit small, with a tiny shower, but it was clean, which is all I need.

We had noisy neighbours, which isn't ideal, who decided to ignore the no smoking signs, so every night we received an awful smell of cigarette smoke - not the hotel's fault though.

Breakfast is poor. It was only breads, jam and croissants. There were a few pieces of fruit, but they didn't look that edible. There are only about 10 tables in the breakfast area, which were definitely not enough to accommodate all the people staying there, so we had to wait a bit to get a table. However the staff working at breakfast are lovely, so they make it a bit more enjoyable.

Every evening (well supposed to be every evening, but we realised it was dependent on which staff member was working) they provided a 6-8pm happy hour, with chips, juice and sparkling wine, absolutely free of charge. This worked well, because we used the free WiFi (only available in reception) around that time, after coming back from sight seeing and before going out for dinner, so received some nibbles too.

The hotel is located perfectly for all of Rome's sights. There are some really lovely restaurants on the main road (one parallel from the street Hotel Caravaggio is on), which I would suggest going to, rather than the ones immediately close by to the hotel).

Dear Guests,
thank you for your contibution. We are happy you liked our hotel from many points of view. We are very disappointed you wrote that our breakfast is poor. Our guests can choose from: coffee, tea (black, green, fruit, camomile), chocolate, milk (warm or cold), orange juice, corn flakes, muesli, cakes, biscuits, croissants, three types of bread, toasted bread, eggs, different marmalades, chocolate spread, honey, cheese, apples and oranges (fresh delivered each morning from the fruit market), white and fruit yoghurt, so we think our offer is quite generous. If you had problems with the neighbours from other room, it was possible to inform our reception. We prepare the happy hour (free of charge for all our guests) every day (from Monday to Sunday) from 6. pm to 8. pm. In spite of your remarks we hope you have nice memories and we will see you again.

“When in Rome”

The loveliest place, the heart of Rome, beautiful and pleasant hotel Caravaggio offers everything a tourist needs when in Rome. The hotel is located near every attraction one NEEDS to visit- Fontana di Trevi, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza navona, Coloseum, Pantheon, Forum Romanum, Galeria Borghese. The hotel is also near Vatican and san Pietro basilic... you can go there by foot, because the furthest location is one metro station away. The hotel staff is friendly and ready to help if you have any doubts or difficulties. You can call them anytime and they will be there to give you any instruction needed. Our room was beautiful and full of warmth. The breakfast was lovely, too. I'm looking forward to staz at this hotel again next time I visit Rome. I LOVE Rome!

“This is in an apartment block ..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

I travelled here for a short trip with my mum - we are 29 and 53.

The location is ideal if using the aiport bus and is close, within walking distance to the colosseum and roman forum. The street the hotel is situated on is fairly quiet.

We had booked a twin room and on arriving (at 11pm) were shown to a double room, when i explained to the staff and showed them my reservation I was told that twin meant two people and the bed was adequate. After refusing to pay he agreed that we would sleep in the double room that night and move in the morning as all other rooms were full.

I am 5ft 2" and 57kg - i could barely fit in the shower, i could get in there and stand still but bending down to get the soap meant my skin touched the filthy shower curtain, so if you are any bigger than this then good luck. Also whilst in the shower the light - which is on a timer - switched itself off so i'd to get out and turn it back on again.

Breakfast was right outside our room - literally we could open the door and touch a breakfast chair - so we were up bring and early the next morning to move rooms.

On returning - our things had been moved to the new room, this room was much bigger and brighter and the bathroom had improved ten fold, as had the member of staff on the reception desk - so I guess it depends what room you are in in the hotel and if the staff can be bothered doing their job.

The lift is gorgeous - its original and very beautiful - however we were only on the first floor so no need to use it. this is the only good thing about the stairwell though - otherwise there is lose wiring in junction boxes that are open, the stairwell is dirty and at the main entrance there are garbage bins that stink. The hotel does not own the whole bulding - there are other people who have apartments in this block.

If i were to return to Rome i'd try else - this would not be my first choice.

Room Tip: If your original room is not suitable ask for another as they vary in standard

“Christmas at the caravaggio”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011 via mobile

My partner and i are currently staying at the Caravaggio hotel, in room 22
and thoroughly enjoying our stay. The hotel is situated on a quiet street in the centre of Rome and the hotel staff are very good, they look after you and nothing is too much trouble.
A good continental breakfast good variety and a firm but comfortable bed and a nice room with shower,tv,fridge. There is also a fantastic 80 year old lift which is amazing!

“Clean, tidy, well presented, great value for money in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011 via mobile

Our budget was fairly tight so for £150 ish for the 3 nights I wasn't expecting too much, however we were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, friendliness and overall presentation. Yes the rooms are small and it can a little noisy in the morning due to other guests in the corridors but for a hotel on this budget it was perfect. Although our legs were very tired due to all the sight seeing we found the location ideal for the attractions and walked everywhere. The highly recommended la carbanarra restaurant and Ai Tre Scalini wine bar are only minutes away. Our only recommendation for the hotel would be hooks on backs of doors to hang coats etc as space was premium.
