“Location, but needs work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2012 NEW

I found this hotel in a Rick Steves book. I can't say that I would recommend it to anyone. While the location is very good for exploring Rome on foot, I think better accomodations can be found for the money. The hotel and its furnishings have a worn look to them. Examples: The stairway needs a good cleaning, especially the corners and the stairway walls are peeling and need painting. The carpets and bedspreads look like they have been there for ages. My bathroom was clean and my room was quiet, so I won't complain too much. Breakfast was less than I would have expected, even in a European hotel. Luckily, I needed this room for only one night before going out on a cruise. There are lots of hotels in the area, so try somewhere else. Note to guests with heavy luggage or disabilities: There are stairs to climb before you get to the elevator. No one offered to help with the luggage.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from the street

Dear travellady83,

we are very sorry to know that you have not enjoyed your short stay at Selene.

Let me answer your points:

"The hotel and its furnishings have a worn look to them. Examples: The stairway needs a good cleaning, especially the corners and the stairway walls are peeling and need painting."

Right, we are working on refurbishing and restyling of the stairways, without affecting our guests stay. I can say that within the end of Summer it will be everything revamped and our historical building will be brought to its former splendour.

"Breakfast was less than I would have expected, even in a European hotel."

I do not understand if your "less" is about quality or quantity standards. Both are usually rated veyr high by our guests, so I would really like to know in details what did not appeal to you. Please write me in private, i would be grateful if you could help us to improve our standards.

"Note to guests with heavy luggage or disabilities: There are stairs to climb before you get to the elevator. No one offered to help with the luggage."

We are very sorry about it, we do not have a 24 hours porter, like 4-stars hotels. If you ask reception we are able to send you someone on demand.

Thanks for your candid comments, looking forward to your next visit.

Kind regards

Lorenzo Macinanti

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2012

This hotel is a 5 minute walk to Central Stazione. The location is great. The restaurants around the area are very good. The hotel is a bit old and looks a bit run down, but it has all the facilities and our stay Hotel Selene was very comfortable. We could walk to all the main attractions, Colosseum and Vatican and it was close to the main shopping streets as well. The reception area seems a bit removed from the hotel, as it's next door to the main hotel, the rooms are a bit dark, but the service, location and facilities of this hotel cannot be faulted.

“Good location, friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2012

Stayed at Hotel Selene with my parents in April, 2012. Picked it because of location, reviews here on Trip Advisor, and price.

It was a quick walk from the train station and not a problem with our bags. The staff was friendly, especially the gentleman working when we initially checked in. He allowed me to practice my broken Italian and then clarified everything in English that I was unsure of.

The check-in desk is next to the hallway leading to the rooms. The building appears to be shared by 2 or 3 other hotels. The exterior hallway of this main building is in need of some repair. There is a small elevator to use as well. We stayed on the 3rd floor. The room was clean, but not overly warm and cozy. The bathroom was big by European standards, though the corner shower was teeny tiny! The room was air conditioned and worked well.

Breakfast was included and it had a variety of options, though mostly typical Italian in nature.

I would stay here again. It was clean and I felt safe staying there. Is the most luxurious place I've stayed? Not by a mile, but when you're traveling, you're not spending that much time in the room anyways.

Dear carzim59,

I am very glad to know that you have spent a good time at Selene.

Thanks a lot for all your kind words of appreciation.
Just wanted to point that the refurbishing works of the common areas are already started and will take place all through summertime. We are very confindent that this is not going to affect our guests' stay anyway.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Looking forward to your next stay,

Kind regards,

“Fantastic location, fantastic price and a bath tub!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 April 2012

Right near the centre of Rome. Large room with nice bathroom. Only downside was that it smelled slightly of cigarette smoke. Continental breakfast was awesome and staff helpful. Stayed January 2011.

Excellent value, centrally-based hotel within walking distance of metro and buses. Good breakfast choice, no evening meal but several restaurants nearbye. Don't go to the one they recommend, expensive. Recommend you seek out Est! Est! Est! in a side street close bye, friendly family-run piazzeria with good food at a reasonable price.
A couple of drawbacks - no tea-making facilities in room and with tea at 3 or 4 euros a cup you would be advised to pack a travel kettle and some teabags! Also massive tv but every channel in Italian.

23 April 2012
Dear catrina s,

we are very glad to know you have spent a good time at Selene! Thanks for your words of appreciation and for your suggestions, we will take care of them.

Let me answer your quotes in details:

- A couple of drawbacks - no tea-making facilities in room and with tea at 3 or 4 euros a cup you would be advised to pack a travel kettle and some teabags!

Right! Having a tea, or boiled water in hotel rooms is not very usual in italian hotels.... I think it's a cultural issue :-) Personally, I love having a herb tea or camomille before sleep, and trust me, it's something that we have already planned to feature in our next "hotel upgrade".
Anyway, if you ask our desk we are able to provide a cup of tea during the afternoon/evening and pricing is no way 4 euro a cup! :-)
On the other hand I must say that nowhere is stated that we have "facilities for tea/coffe in room".

- Also massive tv but every channel in Italian.

Our Tv has got hundreds of channels... intrernational channels start around ch. number 6-700 - not a massive list indeed, but we have major english, spanish, german and french channels!

- no evening meal but several restaurants nearbye. Don't go to the one they recommend, expensive.

Sorry to hear about that. Honestly, for Rome standards I don't think you might call our restaurant Cotto "expensive" - mainly because their quality is over the average and the bill is on the right track. Moreover, we have just revamped our collaboration and now our guests have a 20% discount on their bill (just tell the waiter when you arrive that you're located at Selene!).
I wish you to give Cotto one more chance next time!

Looking forward to your next stay!
