“Wish I'd read the reveiws....!!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2006

4 nights in mid-July with air-con that switches off after 2 mins!!!! Need I say more? We thought the lift hilarious - high point of stay! Rooms - down-at-heel - linen clean, fridge cold - but that's it! Breakfast was POOR - very little on offer and what was, very poor quality. Location a bit rough but we had no trouble. That's the perils of online booking!!!!

“Worst Hotel Ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2006

This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The sheets were very rough, the pillows were flat, the comforter was old, had cigarette burns and did not smell like it had been washed in quite some time. The refrigerator did not get cold. As for the air conditioning, you have no control over it. It barely comes on and at night only (I believe they turn it on for about an hour or so at 11pm, but it does not get cool AT ALL). Extremely poor lighting and located in a terrible neighborhood. THe bathroom was the worst part. The body towels felt like tablecloths and the hand towels were like napkins. And the shower curtain was MOLDY. Really really moldy. It was hard to even get a shower and I didn't feel clean at all when I got out.

If you are going to Rome, spend the extra money and stay somewhere else, it will make your trip much more pleasant. Hope this helps you!

“A disgrace to master yoda”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2006

From reading the last reviews, I have been inspired to write my own account of the hotel. I being a jedi master did not find the hotels facilities sutible for any living being on any living planet except maybe Jabba the Hutt. But even he would hire a bounty hunter to eliminate the owner when he saw the 150 steps he would have to climb, because according to the ruls of the elevator that I recived when entering the hotel(two bags, one person or three people and one bag at a time in the lift) His weight would exceed the limit and probably bring him to his death.
The rooms were unexceptable, even for the amount we payed. There was no room to meditate on the ways of the force and definately no room to spar with lightsabers.( one of the manys things a jedi must day daily, even on a mission)
Six padawans to a five bedroom room. One endded up sleeping on the floor, to which if master yoda ever found out, there would be no doubt he would shut the hotel down.
We enjured dirty towels every day, which is not very plesent when coming back from a hard fight from a sith lord, and dont even mention the tiolet paper. It was never there. And master Windu gets very annoyed when theres no tiolet paper.
This hotel was a disgrace to the eternal city, im just hoping that none of the padawans looked out the window in the middle of the night because they would have seen scenes worse that the lower levels of Corusant.

“Mna Sraideanna”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2006

Well..... Our hotel journey started 150 steps at the bottom of the staircase next to a wooden box attached to a rope with iron bars around it for 'support'! Because none of us trusted the 'lift' we all used the stairs.... all 34 of us.... 150 stairs.... with our luggage.... ya so upon our arrivals to the rooms we noticed our 'mini bar' was an empty plugged out fridge and our safe.... was soo safe... that it didnt open.... however there was a hole you could pop your money into.... you just couldn't get it out again... The blankets looked like they had been in the hotel since the 30's and covered in moths... which funnily enough, made us all have some sort of allergic reaction and we all got colds while staying there! The bed was broken, the shower was broken, the toilet seat was broken! There were magnificant views... of.. men working hard....*no pun intended*.... and they were happy with audiences of young girls! The restaurant downstairs was lovely, however i would strongly advise you against this neighbourhood if you have: young children, are against mna sraideanna, or any type of passing of materials (illegal or not so) and i would also strongly advise: looking out the windows at night time, and leaving a child watch the television unsuppervised! However, Rome itself is a gorgeous place, its well worth the visit and i wish to return again soon!

“What's the Italian for nightmare???”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2006

HOTEL SECURITY: Firstly, extreme caution should be exercised in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, as our group did encounter numerous problems with pick-pockets. Placing a lock on your baggage is not sufficient protection, as we discovered that certain individuals carry blades with which to slash the material of a tourist's bag. Our group was therefore, greatly alarmed to find that the keys to our rooms were stored in a BOWL on the reception desk, adjacent to the open door. During our stay, we consistently retrieved our own keys upon entering the lobby, UNSUPERVISED, and could essentially have taken any key we wished.

HOTEL STAFF: Our group leader had mediocre Italian, but primarily we had hoped to deal with the hotel personnel through English. Things transpired very differently. On numerous occasions, we found ourselves berated loudly through italian by staff members, as a result of simple misunderstandings, e.g. taking a chair from one table in the lounge, to another. Their conduct was altogether rather hostile.

HOTEL FACILITIES: That elevator! What a horrible experience. Your options as a patron, are either to brave the countless flights of stairs to reach your room.. or to cram into a narrow, rickety cage, which bumps from wall to wall on its ascent. More alarming still- the lift door CAN be opened during its ascent/descent, and though it causes the elevator to halt, this is hardly safe.

HOTEL ROOMS: Though we weren't expecting anything luxurious.. the basic necessities in any room, weren't present. The leg of one of the beds inexplicably collapsed. The toilet seat was broken. The shower didn't work. This isn't acceptable, regardless of how cheap the accommodation is. Furthermore, the noise from the street outside was unreal. The street was cleaned nightly at 2am, while the rubbish was similarly collected at a ridiculous hour.

All in all, our stay at the Hotel California greatly detracted from our overall enjoyment of our time in Rome.
