I did a fair bit of research before selecting Planet 29 as my friends and I were on a budget and Rome's city centre is not a budget destination really. You are going on faith a little when you select a 3 star hotel as it's not going to have the bells and whistles that Americans are used to in the US. The main things you want for a 3-star hotel in Rome are going to be cleanliness, hot water, and decent service. Thankfully, faith came through for us with Planet 29. It is a 5-10min walk from Termini train station which is where all the trains and buses from the airports land. The hotel itself was very pleasant, although we did have to drag our suitcases up two flights of stairs to reach the reception (this will soon change though as they are opening up reception downstairs at street level). Let me do a quick pro/con list:
Pros:
- Perfect location (near train station and easy walking distance to all the major sites)
- Very lovely, friendly and helpful staff
- Clean rooms, beds and bathrooms
- Free WIFI
- Nice little outdoor closed in courtyard
- Nice breakfast area (although we didn't eat breakfast at the hotel)
- Decent little restaurant across the street from the hotel that had a nice buffet style antipasto section along with a full menu of pastas, pizzas, and meats. Pizza was nothing to write home about, but everything else was pretty good at a great price. We ate very well for €10 a head.
Cons
- No elevator to carry up your cases to the room
- Not the most comfortable bed
- No toiletries, so bring your own shampoo, shower gel, etc
- Really small TVs, but you don't come to Rome to watch Italian TV ;)
All in all, I really recommend this place. My friends and I are all pretty low maintenance and realistic about the cost/quality ratio of hotels around the world. For its category, this hotel ticks all the boxes. If you want better rooms, beds, add-ons, you need to fork out more money.
