“Good Central Budget Accomodations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2005

Yes, the hotel was a little "homely" (decor a little old) and our first room air conditioning didn't work but we were changed to a room with working air. Although in 30 degree heat the chilled water air conditioning isn't very effective. This hotel is therefore not recommended for travelers used to North American cool in the hot days of an Italian summer.

On the plus side the hotel has an excellent breakfast buffet - as good as you will get in North America - everything from juice, cereal, yoghurt & croissants to hot ham & eggs (the eggs will stay hot if everyone closes the lid on the bain-marie). Free high speed internet is available - single fixed computer in the lounge area.
The rooms and hotel are clean and the staff efficient. Although some could do with a refresher course on customer relations.

The hotel has a good restaurant attached (20 - 30 euros p.p. for fixed menu tourist dinner)

The hotel location is excellent for getting around it is literally 'round the corner' from the central "Termini" station (100 yards or so) which has access to main rail, subway, streetcars and buses as well as a shopping mall (in the station) with a good and very reasonable grocery store.

“Dingy rooms, but clean”

We booked this hotel through a friend in Rome. Not a very good recommendation. The rooms were very dingy but clean. The breakfast was non-descript the staff did their best to avoid catching your eye. The coffee was cold but a better option (and I use this term carefully!) was the cappuccino (still out of a machine).
It is a reasonable base to pound the streets of Rome. It is only a few steps from the Termini station.
If you go take a pillow in your luggage as there are only waifer thin ones available!
It should be one of your last choices!!

Excellent restaurant in Rome is Taverna Trastevere in Via de Politeama the best meal we have ever had anywhere in the world, and we are well travelled! It has been in the same family for over 100 years, there are no taxis home on a Saturday night though (the taxi drivers must be out on the town!)

“one to miss”

Agree with the other review. This was not our original booking, we had booked the Grand Hotel Tiberio through Expedia. However when we arrived late on the thursday evening we were told that although it was the hotel's fault, there was a mistake in the booking system and they were going to move us to an equally rated hotel in their chain. Not a good start to the trip. We were moved to the San Giorgio, which turns out is not the same star rating - hardly surprising given the rooms - not air conditioned as stated when I checked on return on expedia website. The reception is dark and smelly, the staff were very miserable, despite our efforts to be cheerful. The room was stuffy so we opened the windows for fresh air but our room faced into an inner courtyard and it was very noisy as the group of American students staying thought it easier to hang out of their windows and yell at eachother til 3 am - not the hotels fault, but it was nevertheless very noisy and a complaint to reception was not followed through. The room did not have extra blankets or pillows and it was quite a huge discussion at reception to get an extra blanket. The only good thing was the location in terms of walking distance to sites and being close to the train station. Breakfast was reasonable, although whilst our eggs where hot, I've never know scrambled eggs to be made with only the yoke! I would not recommend this hotel at all. We met another group of people on the flight back who had booked into a different hotel chain through the internet and had also been moved to a less superior hotel on arrival....be aware!

“Good location, ancient equipments”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2005

We spent 3 nights in this hotel on the 6th floor. The lobby smelt, the room wasn't well equipped and had this 'old and used' smell. As you may see on the photos the equipments was really old and used. In addition the rooms were pretty small as well.

The breakfasts were okay even though the eggs were always cold... it's a mistery how could that happen every morning?!

The walls are so thin you can hear the cleaning ladies chatting in the hall. At least they were persistent. They start working every morning at 8:15. You don't need an alarm clock.

Why I chose 'Okay, but some problems' level is that it has a very good location as from Termini you can access each corner of the historical city. But, for that reason only don't choose this hotel as there are 2-star hotels in the same street that are in much better shape. This hotel was built in the '40s of the last century and no developments happened since then. At least no with the room we stayed in.
