stayed here from 22-25 oct with a girlfriend. Had booked 2 single rooms, but due to a mix-up, I ended up in a double room and consequently paid €100 more than my friend. In fairness, the hotel did check out the booking error with Booking.com and charged me the same rate as my friend the last 2 nights. Her room was 110 on the ground floor, nicely decorated, clean, quiet, modern bathroom. No amenities whatsoever, but fresh towels and linen were of a decent standard. My room was on the 4th floor, room 406, extremely noisy with traffic and partygoers right outside my window, especially on the Sat. night. The only plus was that I had a view of the Vatican cuppola and that was nice. My room was nowhere near as nice as my friend's and my bathroom had the tiniest shower I think I have ever seen - I literally could not lift my arms to wash my back!! There was mould in the corner of the shower cabinet and the shower head was rusty & disgusting. On arriving, my sheets smelled of smoke, however on mentioning this to the man at reception, they were changed immediately. The men at receptio during the day spoke English really well, but the Russian boy who manned reception at night hardly spoke a word of English. Impissible to communicate with him. The continental breakfast included in the room rate was a joke - chocolate cornflakes, regular cornflakes, croissants, cake, white bread, jam, honey and coffee. There was pineapple or orange "juice", but the orange juice was actually a pinkish-red colour - really awful and quite bizarre! There was processed, pre-packaged cheese, and cold meat as toppings for the bread. I recommend skipping breakfast here and going out instead. The best thing about this hotel is its locatio, right on the corner of Via Germanico, 5mins walk from the Vatican - which is why we chose it. The hotel is in a beautiful old building, and the lift reflects that!! On the second night of our stay, my friend had a rather traumatic experience: at around 6am her door was opened and she awoke to find someone in her room. She screamed, jumped out of bed and ran towards the door. The person who had let themselves into her room fled down the corridor, leaving the room door wide open and not uttering a single word, not even an appology!! My friend and I reported the incident to the man on reception and he claimed that it was the maid who had opened my friend's door by accident, thinking it was the cleaning cupboard!! Needless to say, we found that hard to believe; a maid would never start work at 6am and even if she had made such a stupid error, one would think she would at least have apoligised and closed the door behind her. My friend was really nervous in her room after that incident and was afraid it might happen again. In summary, the Hotel Amalia is ideally located if you want to visit the Vatican, but otherwise has very little going for it. At €130 a night for a single room, it is over-priced and just nit worth the money.
