“Excellent hotel, and good value”

I booked this hotel after cancelling my first choice hotel, and I'm glad I made the swap. Really, I couldn't find anything to complain about in this hotel - the room we were allocated was a good size double, with a perfect view of the church. The room was comfortable, clean and the en suite very well maintained: even the 1950/60s built in radio still worked!

Breakfast was also very good. I've read other reviewers complaining about having to pay for bacon and eggs - seriously? Try something different! You're in Rome - if you want an English breakfast guaranteed, don't leave the UK.

We also ate at the hotel for our first night, and had the set menu. The meal was well cooked and very tasty, and again, nothing to complain about. Pretty good value I thought for the hotel - they're usually overpriced. There's a fantastic view across the city from the restaurant too.

The Mecenate Palace is under five minutes' walk (unless you're slow) from termini station. There are plenty of restaurants and shops in the area, and although it's not a quiet area, we had no problems with sleeping. Termini is somewhat seedy - think Kings Cross in the 90s - but there are so many people around that it doesn't feel inherently unsafe.

It's often a gamble, trying to find a good value, clean, comfortable place to stay, but the Mecenate Palace did exceed expectations, and I would definitely choose it again for a future stay.

“Great hotel, ideal for long or short stays, we loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

An easy to find hotel that's less than 10 minutes walk from Termini station. It is situated directly opposite Santa Maria Maggiore Basillica, a stunning church that we had the most amazing view of from our huge bedroom window. Reception staff were very helpful and welcoming. The included breakfast buffet had lots of choice and certainly sets you up for a busy day of sight-seeing - just don't leave it until the last 15 minutes of breakfast time or you may struggle to find a table. Our room was much bigger than we expected, some pictures may make it appear dated but we thought it was true Italian charm! We only stayed for 2 nights but would definitely have stayed longer if we could. Overall a very clean, beautiful hotel in the perfect location for exploring all the sights of Rome.

Room Tip: If you can get a room facing the church, the view will be amazing every time you look out. We were o...

“First time to Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

My fiance and I traveled to Rome in April 2011. It was our first time visiting so location was important for us. We chose Mecenate palace because of the location, price and reviews and we chose right! The hotel is centrally located and is close to pretty much everything except for the Vatican. You can easily walk to Termini station, the Colosseum, restaurants and many other sites.
We had a standard room which was a good size for European standards. Rooms were clean, bed comfy and the shower was hot with plenty of water pressure. To be honest we were really only had the hotel to sleep, because Rome has so much to see during the day. The hotel staff was friendly and very helpful.
The breakfast which is held on a breathtaking terrace was great! No hot food, but the cereal, muffins, fruit and yogurt filled us. Definitely get the cappuccino which is no extra charge!
We used the wireless internet a few times which worked well. Unlike other reviews, I did not find it to be expensive.
I would def recommend this hotel and stay here again. I am sure that there are more luxurious hotels in Rome, but if you aren't looking to spend a ton and plan to site see most of time, then definitely stay here!
Some tips for Rome, book your tickets to Colosseum ahead of time and get there early! Also if you can go on a week day to avoid the crowds. Do the same for the Vatican too. You can walk pretty much everywhere so we never took a cab. The subway is great and very reliable. Make sure to go to Ostia Antica right outside Rome! You can take the train there.

“It was...ok...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed here for 6 nights on our honeymoon. We got a decent price, and our package came with free transfers and breakfast.

Location:
Ok. It is right accross the street from a great market, which we used a lot. It was accross the street from St. Margaret Majorie church, which was nice. It also had a park and a subway stop at the end of the street, which was ideal, about a 5 minute walk. It was also a 15 minute walk to Termini station, and we did walk there with our luggage. However, there were no good resteraunts that were close. We were really close to "China Town" and a bunch of made in China cheap shops. The deli next door was ok, but not great, meaning that most of our dinning was far. One night we ate at a resteraunt that was 3 blocks away, and it was nice but expensive. Go an farther, and we were surrounded by McDonalds, and super touristy resteraunts.

Rooms: Small, old, stained carpet and bedspread. I know that this is the average Rome experience, so it didn't bother me too much.

Breakfast: Ok. The one thing that annoyed me was our package specified that we got "Hot American Breakfast" and there were signs on the table that said the hot eggs and food was extra. Only upon insisting that it was included in our package could we get it. Is that really so expensive to offer? It was never a big serving. The regular spread was cheese, lunchmeat, and bread, very mediocre. So was the coffee and capuccinos.

Service: The best thing about this place was the front desk. We spoke to many people who were very helpful with recommendations, directions, and advice.

Would I stay here again? Not really. I think I could have a better room and location for not much more money,
