“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

We've just returned from a lovely 3 night stay at the Kolbe hotel arriving on the 9th Feb. The hotel staff were all very welcoming and friendly. When we arrived we were given a map and shown places to visit. The maps are just on the reception desk and really easy to read. Our room was a suite overlooking the Gardens and was very quiet at night. The rooms were spotless and cleaned everyday. Breakfast was Continental buffet style and bacon & scrambled eggs being replaced regularly so always fresh and plenty of fruit yoghurts cereal croissants etc. The location was great for the Roman Forum and the Colosseum with all the other sights within walking distance. After a full day walking around Rome it was nice to sit in the bar and have a glass of wine and had a good laugh with the staff on the bar and also chatted to other residents who were also there to see the Rugby. Unfortunatey it snowed the weekend we visited so the Colosseum & Forum was closed but we still saw lots and now have a great excuse to go back later in the year. The hotel can also arrange taxi transfers at good prices. We could not fault the hotel, staff and the standards (My husband works abroad so stays in hotels all the time and is very fussy & he didn't complain once). When we left I realised I had left some clothes in the wardrobe and rang the hotel from the airport so they are posting it over to me. Will definitely be revisiting and would recommend it to anyone visiting Rome.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the gardens are very quiet

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Ignore the snobby average reviews on this hotel. People who say rooms were not big enough, location was not good etc are talking rubbish. I am in my early 20's, I took my girlfriend to this hotel and it was perfect. Room was not overly big but absolutely spotless and changed every single day with fresh towels and bedding. Breakfast was repetitive but again, brilliant and plenty of choice I found. Location was excellent, just 10mins to colosseum and 10mins the other way to get into city centre. Brilliant hotel all round with very pleasant staff... You can't get much better but I suppose some people are just ridiculously hard to please, this hotel was great value, I promise you won't be disappointed!

“Good location and a good base to explore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Stayed for 3 nights during the snow at the beginning of Feb. Staff all very helpful and all spoke very good English on reception.
The room was modern, spotlessly clean and had a very good heating/aircon system. The heated towel rail in the bathroom was very welcome as we had too dry out some clothes after the snow.
Breakfast was typical continental and plentiful. Coffee machine was a bit of a let down.
The best point of this hotel was its location. Very easy to walk to a lot of the major sights including the Forum and Colosseum. Little tip is too pick up a free map from the reception as we found it a lot clearer and helpful than our guide book one.
Booked through British Airways and it was a bargain. Would definitely recommend this hotel. especially through booking with British Airways

“very pleasant stay, great location”

I spent three nights here and it is very nice. the staff are very friendly and helpful. the buffet breakfast is as mentioned in other reviews a basic continental with scrambled eggs and sausages as well. it is help yourself and the espresso machine works fine. the location is excellent especially for seeing the Forum and colosseum. it is a farther walk to the Pantheon, Trevi fountain and Vatican. the price of the room was very good, and the room itself is comfortable (especially after the micro room I had at my last hotel here in Rome near Trevi). it is spotlessly clean and very nice bathroom. I didn't eat dinner or lunch at the restaurant, but the prices there are high, even for rome. 16-18 for Primi and 22-28 for Secondi (Euro). I would stay here again and recommend it for anyone coming to Rome for sightseeing.

Room Tip: upper floor facing garden. also out the door and to the right 50 meters is a small restaurant/bar ca...

“Fantastic hotel - would definitely recommend!”

We stayed here for a long weekend for my birthday. The staff were all extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming - a great asset to the hotel! The hotel itself is in a beautiful old building, but is very modern and clean inside - our room was perfect! And the location is ideal, as you can easily walk to the Colosseum and access all of Rome's attractions on foot. On our first evening in Rome we ate in the restaurant. The steak was excellent, but the seafood spaghetti was very disappointing - just containing clams, and very dry (no sauce!). However, the chocolate fondant for dessert was wonderful, and we were given a plate of homemade biscuits to nibble on whilst we waited for the dessert to bake - delicious! The only downside we found to this hotel was breakfast, It wasn't to the high standard that was set in every other area. You are very much left on your own to help yourself to drinks, food etc., but to be honest, I would expect waiter service in a 4-star hotel, at least for hot drinks. Also, the cooked breakfast looked to have been sitting out for quite some time, and didn't offer much choice. A menu of freshly cooked hot breakfast items would have been much nicer - especially seen as it was snowing during our stay! If you're happy with basic fruit, bread, ham, cheese and yogurts for breakfast then you will be fine! All in all, an excellent hotel, and I would highly recommend it!
