My 76 year old mother and I stayed for 3 nights in the Tommy Room in late September (her fourth trip, my first, to Italy) and we couldn't have been happier. Yes, the Tommy Room is the smallest, but the built-ins on both sides of the bed, with pull out shelf (for books, my nightly glass of Proseco (!), etc.) really helped stretch the size of the room. Our room was tucked between the honour bar/fridge and reception (practically a closet, but no matter to me) - but neither generated any noise that kept us awake at night. The location is excellent - it really is a snap to take the Line A metro from Termini train station to the Barberini metro station and walk the 1 block; and it's just a few blocks to the Spanish Steps. Edgar greeted us when we arrived and was very helpful with directions and suggestions.
I thought I had read there was no breakfast but when we arrived Edgar did say a continental breakfast was available for 10 euors; we didn't take him up on his offer so I can't comment. That said, there are a number of places within a block offering fresh fruit, coffees, sweet breads, and we saw a place our last day around the corner on your way "up to" Via Veneto that served eggs, bacon, toast, coffee and juice for 10 euros on the sidewalk patio so you have plenty of options. On a final note, I like firm mattresses so liked every bed I slept in while I was in Italy; and after walking 10 hours a day every day I usually was asleep in minutes so the flat pillows never bothered me...but I must say the 2 fluffy pillows each at Casa Howard were heaven!
I am returning to Rome again next September, as a solo traveller, and if I could afford it I would book the Tommy Room again in a heartbeat...but my budget is closer to CAD $125/night so not to be for my next trip. If/when I return as a couple/with a friend I will certainly book in Casa Howard again.
As for Rome - I had booked the 9 package tours (4 in Venice, 3 in Florence, 2 in Rome) with ArtViva and SO SHOULD YOU (!!!)...they are all fabulous. All the guides were informative and entertaining and significantly added to my appreciation and understanding of what I was seeing and where I was. Specific to Rome, I may very well rebook with Guido (Colloseum, Forum and Pantheon) and "Dr. Chris" (Vatican Museum), they were so good!
One final note, as I plan my next trip I'm reading these reviews from people about the small rooms, or weak breakfasts, or rude people and I just have to say I don't get it...first, you didn't come x number of time zones to spend all your time in your room, in cities where you can walk from one beautiful attraction to the next within a few comfortable hours, did you? Second, there are a zillion excellent restaurants, get out there and find your favourite. Third, rude people...people were constantly helping my mother with her luggage (up and down stairs on buses, trains, subways and planes), I walked an average of 10 hours a day in every city we stopped in and felt like I must have asked 20 people a day for directions and each and every one responded favourably to my opening smile and closing grazie as I launched off in whatever direction I thought they tried to explain to me...rude people and I never seemed to cross paths...maybe they sensed I was just 'going with the flow' and 'embracing la dolce vita' and that I had absolutely, positively, fallen in love with Italy!
