“Unwelcome to Rome!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2007

Quite an impressive-looking hotel in a good district just north of the Villa Borghese. However, although described as being in a tranquil area, it suffered from a lot of road noise, being sandwiched between two busy commuter streets. The public areas were well decorated and furnished, but our en-suite room was cramped, particularly the shower-room. The space between the wc pan and the shower screen was so narrow that one was forced to sit sideways to perform. The decor was tired, and the double-glazing had lost its seal, so that the entire picture window was opaque, and the soundproofing was impaired. On two evenings the water had to be run for over 5 minutes before it got warm, and on one night it steadfastly remained cold. The buffet breakfasts were good. For a city hotel it was generally adequate, but the most disappointing thing about the Polo was the total indifference of the staff to the presence of their guests. The reception staff and those in the breakfast room were invariably surly. Not once during our 3-night stay were we asked if everything was ok , and all our attempts at pleasantries, whether in English or broken Italian, were met with monosyllabic responses. The agency through which we booked lists the Polo as a 4-star hotel. On the basis of our limited experience, this would seem very generous.

  • Liked — do not have any very positive liking for any aspect of it
  • Disliked — the demeanour of the staff, the cramped accommodation

“Clean,but terrible!”

Very unfriendly staff, much noise downstairs,so we moved upstairs, the 5th floor is the best. The whole day from 5.30 till 1 in the night you feel the noise and trembling of the metro in the neighborhood.
We never go there again, although the beds are very clean and the tiny small bathroom also.

“Nice hotel, distant from city center”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2007

We stayed in this hotel because we needed to be in this area of town for business, and got a very good deal on it from Expedia ($100 per night). However, this is not where you’d want to be for a leisure visit to Rome, unless you planned to spend your whole time at the Villa Borghese. The neighborhood is upscale and there is a train station a short walk away that links up (one stop) to the metro system (separate lines and systems), but it took about 30-45 minutes to walk to Piazza del Popolo. The room was small but clean, modern and comfortable, with no real frills (fully stocked refrigerator but no safe). The TV did not work at all, although we never complained about it. The bathroom was larger than many, with a stall shower but no tub, while the breakfast buffet was the best we’ve had during our 6 weeks (so far) in Italy – hot scrambled eggs and bacon, and a large selection of other items. We could not get the internet connection in the room to work, so they let us use the ancient and slow terminal in the lobby for free. Staff were reasonably helpful and friendly. We would recommend this hotel only if you don’t mind being a bit removed from the major tourist attractions.

“Satisfying Stay in Rome”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2007

We chose to stay in Parioli due to the proximity of ffamily we were visiting in Rome. While a bit out of the way of tourist attractions, the hotel was clean and quite comfortable. Buses were a short walking distance away and taxi's will come to the hotel. We had a small but ample two bedroom unit which was very nicely decorated. Lighting is a bit dim compared to the States. Heating was very comfortable and extra blankets were available in the room. We would have liked extra pillows and more towels. The room was serviced daily. The shower was a bit cramped but the water was hot and was not lacking in water pressure. (There is no hotel store so try to remember to pack everything you will need.) The adjustable hand held feature was very nice. We could only find one outlet in the entire two bedroom unit to charge our cameras and cell phones with a converter. We ended up charging in cycles and on one occasion we had to set our alarm to get up during the nite to charge another unit (there were three of us with cell phones and cameras with one available outlet in the two bedrooms) Please bring your own radio or alarm cliock as none was provided. There was a phone in the bathroom and the master bedroom. Breakfast was more than ample but we agree that the staff needs to learn how to cook the bacon--it was limp and undercooked! We were allowed to check-in early which was a great convenience due to our early arrival from the airport. The daytime desk staff were not very friendly or helpful. They tried to charge us double the amount we had been quoted on the internet. Bring your reservations and any other info in writing to verify your billing. Great stay for the cost!
