“Don't stay here if you don't like weird odors”

I travelled to Rome solo and after hours of scouring the web for a decent B&B I went with this hotel after reading the (mostly) positive/decent reviews and looking at the website which made everything look really nice. As soon as I walked in the room, I knew it wasn't going to be a great stay. The worst part was the odor in the room...there was some kind of sewage problem and the bathroom just stank to high heaven. There was a very harsh odor of bleach or whatever they tried to use to mask the sewage odor coming from the bathroom. The beds are reasonably comfortable (two twins in my room) and the TV was OK. No internet in the rooms. The size of the room was good. Hotel staff was nice and helpful. I didn't like the fact that they request you to leave your room key behind when go in and out, which I didn't bother doing.

The location was OK only because it is literally steps away from the Termini station...really convenient. But it wasn't all that close to the main attractions in Rome and the neighborhood was a bit sketchy. The best hotspots for travelers seemed to be close to the Trevi Fountain area.

Was not worth the money.

“Stay at the hotel was great and was near to transport link”

I booked a room for 4 at the hotel which was very resonable for the time we went. The room we stayed in was on the roof of the hotel we use the elevator to go part way then we have to walk a few steps up but once we reach up we were secluded since that was the only room on that floor. Room was recently refurbished and was in good condition. The bed has two single bed in one room and a double bed in an adjouning room with the ensuite bath room in between. Room was of a good size and we did not felt crampt in it. We had a patio where we could site and relax if we want to, but was too busy visiting sites to do that. The only downfall was that the room did not have any curtains but because we were the only one on that floor we did not mind too much. Also the internet did not work while we were there and so could not use the courtesy computer to say check in for our flight. But internety shops are close by that are reasonable. The best thing about this hotel is that it is close to the main station Termini, which is about 5 mins walk and also there is lots of restaurant nearby.

“Good enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2010

I recently stayed in this hotel with my father and we didn't encounter any problems at all (other travellers and other reviews don't say the same). The hotel area is really convenient if you need to take the train or the bus to Rome's both airports but it's true that it is not the nicest area in Rome (I suggest you to use the Google Street View function to find out how the area looks like). Let's say that it's a busy area, as the main train station and the main local bus station are just a 2 minutes walk from the hotel main door. By the way, the hotel is located in the 4th and 5th floors of an old building that has other hotels in other floors (there is an elevator). And although the area is busy and you will find all types of people, it is safe.
In regards to the hotel, my father and I found it clean, comfortable and convenient. Rooms and en suite bathrooms are renovated and clean. Beds were comfortable and the room was spacious enough (it has also TV, a chair and a table, air conditioning and a wardrobe). Service was good enough: the room and the bathroom were cleaned everyday, and the breakfast (included in the price) was better than I expected after having read other reviews (breakfast is very important for me, so I was worried about how it would be). What we got for breakfast was: 1 good teacup or 1 coffee cup, 1 glas of fruit juice, 1 fresh croissant, 2 small packed toast, 1 piece of packed butter, 1 piece of packed marmelade, 1 piece of packed chocolate to spread on the toast or better inside the croissant, 1 yoghurt, 1 piece of cake and 1 fruit (banana or apple or pear).
About the staff: we didn't have any problems at all with them although it is true that when you arrive, the first thing they do is to request the full payment of your stay (apparently this is how it works there). They also were helpful when we asked them for directions and means of transport, so we don't have anything to complain about.
Finally let me say that this hotel was not my first option but when I started looking for accomodation in Rome, all places were already booked. So in the end I took this hotel and, fortunately, the result was satisfactory.

“Decent Hotel, good location but the reception staff really let this place down.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

(If there were an option to give hotels half marks I would rate this 3.5 - 3 is a little harsh).

The Scott House Hotel is on the forth floor of a massive tenement block 2 minutes from the central station, which is great for accessing all Romes tourist spots in a few minutes. On foot the Colosseum is around 20 minutes away - still perfectly reasonable. Four flights of stairs may be a bit daunting but there is a lift which makes getting your bags to your room an awful lot easier.

Having read many other reviews of this hotel I can only presume that since they were written Scott House has had a refit since the rooms are now clean, bright and well maintained. The TV is small for the size of the room and you’ll have to leave a deposit before you can get your hands on the remote but honestly, who comes to Rome to watch TV?

The beds were comfortable enough and although the rooms have AC it’s controlled solely from reception. It is effective but the only options are ON or OFF which tends to mean you wake up in the early hours shivering and thinking you’re back in England.

The breakfast, which is included in the price of the room, is fairly minimal: just a Crossiant, a packet of miniscule melba toast and a glass of slightly suspect (and daily changing) fruit juice. If you’re cheeky enough though they’re pretty flexible - we managed to get an extra pastry or two on most days!

The reason that I’m giving this hotel only 3 out of 5 is because of the staff: each and every time I went near reception I was plagued about giving them money. When I booked, several months previously, there was no mention that the payment should be made when we arrived so it came as a shock to us when we were asked to suddenly hand over some money. We withdrew the maximum allowance from an ATM (€250) and gave it to them as proof we wouldn’t run off without paying - this covered well over half the total price and more than the amount due for the length of time we had already stayed. The receptionist seemed quite happy with that but that night we were asked again to pay by another receptionist, and we had to go through the receipt book with her before she believed that we’d paid. Then on our way out of dinner the same receptionist wanted MORE money, saying we had two nights left to pay and that she was suspicous of us not having paid already.

In another incident, I asked if I could get one page printed from the internet. The receptionist said it wasn’t possible, which is fair enough - they’re not a printers but the excuse he gave was that they couldn’t use the computer for anything other than work relating to the hotel, not even personal stuff. When we went out to get the information printed elsewhere he was sat there with his headphones on on Facebook. So much for not using it for personal reasons.

The internet is available free, you just need to get an account made specifically for you, it’s pretty fast but you will have to have your own laptop with Wi-Fi if you want to use it as there isn’t a shared computer.

Considering the price of some of the hotels in the area Scott House Hotel is reasonable, although not cheap by any means. There are plenty of restaurants in the area and you couldn’t get much closer to the station without sleeping on the tracks so its location is ideal. I would suggest this place to someone wanting an extended stay in Rome and not looking at becoming bankrupt, but do be wary of the staff - they could really do with a lesson or two in customer service.

“cheap and cheerful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

After reading most reviews for the scott house we were aprehensive but have been happily surprised. As a family of four we shared a quad room which was basic; four basic beds & a small bathroom but the room supplied what we had paid for (which was a more than resonable price for 7 nights). The room was cleaned everyday, fresh towels were given daily, the staff at the reception were friendly & spoke english fairly well, the breakfast staff was friendly (& made a brilliant cup of tea). We arrived the week they were doing construction on the same floor as us but they caused as little disruption as possible.
It was within walking distance to several good restaurants and the termini station.

not a hotel to visit if you are fussy but if you are looking for a cheap hotel close to everything you need then you wont be dissapointed.
