“Robbed at hotel emmaus!”

i teach a college course in januarys on the art of italy and have recently returned from this year's journey. this was the second time i have stayed at hotel emmaus and my previous experience was fine, in fact i now believe that it perhaps gave me a false sense of safety and security. we returned to the hotel after a long day of touring to discover that at least 3 rooms in the hotel (304, 305 qnd 306) had be broken into. my room was 305 and it had been ransacked with many things of importance to me having been stolen (ipod, camera, chargers, alarm clock, etc.)...the thief had even stolen my shoes and left his nasty pair in the middle of my room. the worst part of this is the response fro the hotel staff. the desk manager refused to call the police and reluctantly called the hotel owner after much drama. the owner eventually took me to the police station which was an unbelievable experience in itself. my students are convinced this theft was an "inside job." i only know that it has been over 2 weeks since this happened and i have never received an apology or any compensation fro hotel emmaus. although there are many good things about this hotel (especially location) i will NEVER stay there again and i would urge anyone else to find a safer alternative. the other guests who were victimized i'm sure would agree!

Room Tip: stay elsewhere!

“First stay was nice but the second time, not as much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed there in Dec 2010 and we were pleasantly surprised. The room given to us was comfortable and very european (read: old world) in ambience. It had a tv and ref. Beds were comfortable. The bathroom was ok. What really impressed us was it was located literally at the back of The Vatican, so it was just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. We had to pay for wifi access but the price was reasonable and service was fast. This is why we opted to stay here again when we went to Rome in Oct. 2011, despite the higher room rate that was quoted (a difference of about 30 euros per night). However, we were quite disappointed when we did not get the same things that we had previously. The rooms that were given to us were very old, needed a paint job, very noisy at night (we're not sure if it was the plumbing or just outside noise) that we hardly had any sleep, and they were a lot smaller than the last time. Breakfast was unspectacular and the breakfast room was so small so everyone got in each other's way. Also, one guy at the reception could hardly speak english so it was really difficult to communicate what we wanted. This to me is important because what's the point in working at the reception of a hotel when you cannot communicate in a language other than your own? Therefore, on the basis of our last trip, I shall only rate this hotel as average.

Best location, excellent service from all the staff especially Luigi who gave great advice and very helpful. Clean rooms, quaint "olde worlde" lift small shower the only drawback. Travelling for three weeks with our adult children staying in 3 & 4 star establishments Hotel Emmaus remains our most memorable.

Brilliant location for exploring Rome. Only 5 mins walk into St Peter's Square. Front of House staff were very helpful and the old lift was both beautiful to look at and worked well. The room was comfortable and clean and even had a refrigerator.
