“Best part of this hotel - leaving!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2008

Stayed here for 2 night during September as part of a Trafalgar Tour. We stayed at about 10 different hotels in Europe and this was by far the worst.

The hotel lift fits one person and one piece of luggage in it and happened to be broken half the time we were there meaning we had to climb the stairs, which isn't such a bad thing but when your room is on level 1 and the breakfast room is on level 7 then it is not convenient.

Our room had a dirty grimy feel to it with old and damaged chip board furniture. The walls were filthy and covered in dirty marks up to the ceiling. The bath was created for a midget. The toilet was dirty, old and extremely noisy. After you flushed it continued to fill loudly for several hours.

Our room was very small, we could only open 1 suitcase at a time on the bed. It was also very dark as our window was covered with a huge metal window shade. We are thankful however that our room didn't face on to the main road as the noise of the horrible broken sounding emergency sirens would have kept us awake all night. The neighbourhood wasn't very nice and the restaurant across the road was terrible, which is no reflection on the hotel itself but there aren't many places around the hotel to eat or shop.

There were some positives. They had a computer with free internet. You could catch public transport into the city centre and breakfast was ok.

  • Liked — free internet, view from breakfast room
  • Disliked — terrible neighbourhood, dirty feel

“All in all and considering the price, a fair accommodation for a short stay”

I stayed 1 night in May 2008 in a double room. The area seems safe and downtown is not too far (you have to take bus, relevant bus station on “Via Nomentana” is very close).

The room was decently furnished but small and minibar was out of order. However, main drawback is the noise from road and adjoining rooms: the walls are really thin so that you can hear all.

The breakfast room includes a roof terrace but the relevant views are ordinary; the food is average (good cakes, but no hot foods as eggs).

I booked via a well known web site and I paid 90€ which appeared to me fair.

“Room should have health warning”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2007

I stayed in this hotel on a week long trek through Italy with Traffalgar Tours (do group tours always put tourists in cheap hotel like this one?). How this hotel can rate itself 3 star is anyone's guess, I think it can pass one star! The room we had was poorly furnished, dirty and dangerous! In our narrow bathroom, one has to jump over the toilet WC in order to get to the shower cubical:- the Italian tourist office should stop hotels from offering rooms like this one!
The hotel is outskirt of Rome, but is on the northern trunk road so it is easy to take bus into the city centre. We did not eat at the hotel but there are plenty of eateries nearby if you don't want to travel into the city. The staff are reasonably helpful and told us how to take the bus, including buying bus tickets from Tobacco shop down the road. Breakfast on the roof top is quite basic but it is refreshing to be on the roof top after being in a cramped room for the night. I have great doubts about returning to this hotel or to join another group tour.

“terrible”

My husband and I went on a European tour for our honeymoon and unfortunately stayed at the Carlo Magno. We were told when we got there that they had just renovated the rooms. This was not true. Everything looked like they slapped paint on and didn't even mask any of the trim. The rooms were okay, but the maid went through our luggage and stole some things (even though we said do not disturb) and when we reported it we were told to WALK to the police station to formally complain. The staff did not apologize they told us that she worked there for 10 years and would never do such a thing. We were then told that the owner wanted to apologize to us directly and kept calling with her ETA. After 4 hours of waiting for her (during dinnertime) we had dinner and she never showed up. The next morning my husband followed up with another manager and was greeted by rudeness! Never stay at the Carlo Magno.

“I do not recommend this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2004

Unfortunately I was very disappointed by the services in the Carlo Magno Hotel. The water mixer did not work in my room and in spite of my permanent reminding about it the hotel management did not fix this problem till my check-out. The temperature on the street was about +40C and you can imagine how it was without shower!
Besides, on last day after room cleaning they forgot to put a new soap and shampoo. The hotel looks very shabby and requires the renovation.
I left the complaint for the director of the hotel but he never answered to it.
I do not recommend this hotel for your stay in Rome.
