“Best, Most Unique Place to Stay in Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Regina Baglioni for three nights in September 2010, and we absolutely loved it - wished we could have stayed longer. We are both in our early thirties and very well-traveled, and neither of us have ever seen a 5-star hotel with as much charm as this one. The rates are also more reasonable than comparable hotels in Italy and across Europe, and yet the service doesn't suffer for it at all. We had a beautiful art-nouveau style room with a huge marble bathroom - very clean and spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable and got us over our jet lag in just one night. After checking in, we were taken with our luggage to our room and given a code to use the complimentary wireless internet (which worked perfectly). We went out in the afternoon and when we came back before dinner there was a complimentary tray of fresh fruit in our room. It was the little touches like this that made us love the Regina.

The breakfast was also very good - excellent variety, fast service from the staff, and very fresh, high-quality food, rather than the slightly stale bread and jam that is served at some other Rome hotels. The concierge was extremely helpful with museum bookings and restaurant recommendations, as well as with providing directions and other local advice. We were never once charged a commission on taxi fares or anything else from the concierge, even though we used his services several times.

The location of the hotel is fantastic, very close to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Borghese Gardens and much more. We walked just about everywhere, although buses and the subway are also very easy and convenient to get to places slightly further afoot, like the Vatican. On a few occasions we took taxis to rest our legs, and found them to be comfortable, clean and not too expensive.

Overall, the Regina Baglioni is the perfect hotel if you're looking for luxury that is also unique and charming, with special attention paid to small details. We can't wait to go back.

“"Not impressed"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2010

Not impressed with the Regina Baglioni. We booked this holiday through British Airways who usually recommend reasonable hotels. Big mistake with this one and not cheap either. The hotel is not shy charging top dollar for shabby rooms. Room 709 decor very dated, room shabby, grout in bathroom needs replacing, carpet needs replacing, furniture needs replacing. Thick dust covered the vent in the bathroom and in the morning the sewerage smell from the bathroom was overpowering.

I don't believe in moaning after I have stayed at a hotel as I am a hotelier myself. If a customer has a geniuine complaint then this should be addressed whilst you are on the premises so that you can try and come to some arrangement to resolve the problem. I went straight to reception after I checked into Room 709 to tell them that I was not pleased with the room that had been allocated. It was dark, very dated bedspread and a carpet your granny would have had in the 40's there was also a loud air conditioning noise outside the window and a brick wall for a view. I was told that it was very busy and the only room that was available was a grande deluxe room which was going to be an extra 250 euros per night this was at a discounted rate as it was selling at 600 euros per night that particular day. Daylight robbery!

I was shown this room which I wouldn't have paid an extra 50 euros. We were told that we could move to another room same category that we were in on the Tuesday. We declined that offer as there was no point, all the rooms looked the same except for the colour scheme. The safety deposit box in the room was also broken.

The concierge recommended a restaurant for us on the Tuesday and my husband got food posioning so he ended up having to spend Wednesday in bed. I asked at breakfast if I could take a cup of tea to my husband who was sick in bed and they did this straight away at a cost of 15 euros for 1 cup.

Make sure that you iron all your clothes before you leave home as they do not have any iron or iron boards for health and safety reasons. However, a maid would come and do it for me. I asked would there be a charge and never got an answer so I decided to wear creased clothes because if a cup of tea cost 15 euros what was I going to be charged for ironing? If you are really concerned about health and safety then why was it possible for me to plug my hair straightners into thye socket in the bathroom? I think that this is just another money making excuse.

Breakfast was ok.

Anyway my advice is to stay clear of Regina Baglioni as they are trading on their name only. I would really like to know how you were rated 5 star as I have stayed in 5 star hotels all over the world and have never encountered rooms like yours.

Advice to the manager and front of house. If guests are unhappy with the room that they are allocated for good reasons then I would suggest that instead of trying to make more money from them to actually do what you should have been doing in the first place by offering 5 star accommodation, not 3 star. Invest some money otherwise the new hotel next door might just pick up some of your business.

Sorry that it has been a negative review but please, please don't waste your money staying at this hotel.

“Nothing 5-star about this place.”

We chose this place based on the location and relatively lower price for a "5 star" hotel. When we got to our room, there was a potent odor that was so vile, I walked right out and back to the front desk. The man at the desk said he would send somebody. We went back the room and waited...and waited....and waited. It was getting close to our dinner reservation, so I went in to take a shower only to discover black mold all over the vents and shower. I immediately walked out and called the front desk- now irate- the man on the phone said that this was 'not possible because baglioni is a 5 star hotel.'. By what standard, I have no idea. Finally someone came to the room. He had the audacity to tell me he did not smell or see anything. Oh, and the only other available room in the hotel was a suite that costs 4 times what we had paid. Finally, I made enough of a fuss (and threatened to leave for a room at the Eden, a real 5 star hotel down the block), that a room magically appeared. Though it was smaller than what we paid for, there was no toxic black mold. Overall a horrific experience and a poor excuse for "5 star." There are many amazing places to stay in Rome, don't make the same mistake we did.
