With Hotel D'Este, charming and old-fashioned comes with slight dilapidation. Our room was nice with quirky decor, but some furnishings were in a state of ruin. The bathroom provided hot water after running the tap for what seemed like hours. The room was adequately clean, however.
Sadly, guests in streetside rooms (esp. on the first floor) might have trouble sleeping, as the traffic noise is loud on the busy street outside. The hotel's location near several metro stops makes sightseeing easy, though the area is not as charming as the neighbourhoods near Pantheon, for example.
The breakfast was quite nice, you can even get a good, human-made espresso, if you ask the breakfast lady. The buffet isn't the biggest in the world, but there's a selection of baked goods, break, cheese, cuts, cereal, yogurt etc.
The free encrypted in the lobby-area is a nice bonus. The staff were friendly, helpful and spoke good English.
All in all, a fine value hotel for a short stay, but some of the quirks might get annoying after several nights.
