“A Mixed Bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2011

With Hotel D'Este, charming and old-fashioned comes with slight dilapidation. Our room was nice with quirky decor, but some furnishings were in a state of ruin. The bathroom provided hot water after running the tap for what seemed like hours. The room was adequately clean, however.

Sadly, guests in streetside rooms (esp. on the first floor) might have trouble sleeping, as the traffic noise is loud on the busy street outside. The hotel's location near several metro stops makes sightseeing easy, though the area is not as charming as the neighbourhoods near Pantheon, for example.

The breakfast was quite nice, you can even get a good, human-made espresso, if you ask the breakfast lady. The buffet isn't the biggest in the world, but there's a selection of baked goods, break, cheese, cuts, cereal, yogurt etc.

The free encrypted in the lobby-area is a nice bonus. The staff were friendly, helpful and spoke good English.

All in all, a fine value hotel for a short stay, but some of the quirks might get annoying after several nights.

“A case of second hand smoke and bad service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011

In point form:

- Horrible front desk service
- Rooms are about 100 years old...I smell moths balls
- When you ask for a non-smoking room...you get one...but your door has a gap at the bottom that allows plenty of smoke from the rest of the hotel to creep in.
- It feels like you are sleeping in a rundown motel, but you just paid 156 Euros to stay there
- Not 3 star...I repeat NOT a 3 star...one at most.

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe and this one is the worst.

Thank you

PS. Good location...near the Termini. Hey its one positive.

“Could do better.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2011

This hotel is is a great location, near the train station etc. 15 min walk from the Colloseum and the forum. Everything was a bit basic. No tea making facilities and the electrics seemed a bit dodgy. It is OK if you only want a bed and are out all day and in the evening. I wouldn't say you could relax or unwind in your room.

“Not bad for the price”

Not as bad as some of the previous reviews may suggest which perhaps could be a little harsh, although a down to earth attitude is required for this hotel to enjoy your stay in Rome, rooms are basic but comfortable with colour television and mini fridge, interior is old fashioned but a little dull but a OK breakfast and a chinese supermarket is on the same block, Hotel is ideally placed to visit the colosseum about 25 minute walk via a shopping district and many resteraunts. D'este is only a 5 minute walk from Termini Station but would advise on arrival at Rome airport use a mini bus service for 15 euro only 1 euro extra than the train which will take you to the door as you can easily get lost when you arrive a Termini station and then have a train ride when returning to the airport, Overall if your stay in Rome is primary to see the Colosseum and the Vatican and a little shopping and a few beers then D'este is ideal but D'este is certainly not 5 star so paying a little extra for a better hotel is worth a consideration. “Disappointing stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2010

I spent some time resourcing and chosing my hotel for my trip to Rome. The Hotel D'Este was my final choice and the price was reasonable. However, the Hotel failed to meet my expectations. Firstly, my room was at the back of the hotel with little natural light. The furnishings were aged and in need of upgrading. The wallpaper was in places hanging off the walls. The bedroom door was badly marked with damaged that had been done to it over several years of battering. The bathroom was clean as was the bedding. The room, however, had no heating that was working. I had complained three times to reception over the two days of my stay and finally gave up enquiring when the heating might work. Hotel staff were friendly but generally ineffective. I regret not spending maybe an extra £10 to get a better quality for my hard earned money!

Top Tip:"Buy your return bus ticket from ciampino on the internet in advance (www.terravison.eu). Its more expensive to buy a single on the return to the airport and avoid the extortionate price offered on the easyjet flight!"
