“Cheap, and still not worth it”

Hotel D'Este (or D'Este Hotel?) is on a residential street in Rome proper. I guess location-wise, it's not bad. About a 5 minute walk from the Termini underground and rail station. And it has free wifi, but only in the lobby area. And there is free breakfast (not great). That's pretty much where the good points end though. The hotel is kind of sketchy from the moment you walk in. Old. Kinda dirty. Looks more like a hostel, although it's not as cheap as one. Everything about the place is old, and not in a good way. Rooms are huge, but ugly and not too clean. If you're there in the summer it's either roast with the AC off or freeze with it on. Furniture, etc is just a collection from the landfill. Elevator functioning is spotty at best. Altogether, I would not recommend this hotel and would not stay there again.

Room Tip: First, don't stay here. But if you do, try to get a low floor as the elevators don't often w...

“Very good hotel, considering its price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

My wife and I just visited Rome last week for our third year anniversary and were situated in this hotel for 3 nights. Staff was very friendly, spoke quite good English too! Old style hotel with a lift in which you have to close door for it to operate and is very small! We also bought 2 hop-on, hop-off bus tickets from reception to move around (recomend to do the same). Breakfast was wonderful with very eager working staff too! Room was clean and towels were changed regularly. Perfectly located to visit Rome (minimum 5 days racomended, in 3 days you hardly see anything). Perfectly near to Termini Station. Instead of trains, we used a taxi, which was at the airport to pick us up about half hour early and came for us from hotel another half hour early than demanded. Contact hotel for details, it is worted, more comfortable and trouble free! Perfect!

Area is quite quite. Be careful of beggers, they are a bit pests, but no danger!

Restaurant for breakfast only.

One major setback is the system of central heating and water gyser. Supposingly, according to Italian laws, hot water and central heating are on only for certain time during day and night (had to take two cold showers too!) This is NOT hotel's management fault I suppose!

Last thing, check for goverment imposed accomodation taxes too!

Have Fun!

Room Tip: We were in room 306, which gives to the backyard. Poor view but quiter I suppose.

“Disappointment”

On first appearances this hotel is typical of rome, Located within 10 mins walk of Termini rail station and within walking distance to some of the main sights. However my experience is that this hotel needs a major facelift in terms of the decor and rooms. Furniture is old and damaged and rooms look jaded and in need of some serious TLC. Wallpaper peeling, high level cistern with no lid so water sprays out and a extractor fan that was loud!

No english language station on the TV (BBC world news, or CNN would be good)

No bar in the hotel

“Thrown back in time”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

The location of the hotel is very central and within easy reach to the main sights.
The staff was curteous and helpful, using their computer effectively to give you exact routes/replies.
Buffet breakfast was quite varied and better than expected for a three star, with good capuccino from the mechanised source.
Linen was clean and towels fresh.
But
The internal decor of the place, the 2-person lift, the high level flushings in the loo, the noisy extractor of the bathroom and the bathroom fittings throw you into a frame of mind of living the turn of the 19th century. And the minute flat TV does nothing to help lift the sensation.

Room Tip: Avoid the 4th floor if you can.
