“Rome trip for my husband's 60th”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We've just come back from the most amazing weekend in Rome to celebrate my husband's 60th. Stayed at Starhotels Metropole for 3 nights booking with Citalia. Lovely hotel, very clean and comfortable room overlooking Via Principe Amedeo with mini bar and complimentary robes and slippers, good cooked buffet breakfast. My only criticism is that the hotel is very large and impersonal, the reception staff seemed rather unfriendly, when checking out they didn't even ask if we had enjoyed our stay. Also seemed very expensive even for Rome prices 2 coffees and 2 amaretto liqueurs 24.00 euros! They do have a restaurant but apart from included breakfast didn't eat there. Close to Termini but no problems with begging as others have said. Maybe better to be nearer the centre, say Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain area for sightseeing but near to Metro to get around. We walked everywhere except Vatican City, caught the Metro for 1 euro and took about 10 mins. Excellent pizzeria in Via Cavour going towards the Colesseo about 10 mins. walk away called Gallo Matto, very lively and great food. Also tried Est, Est, Est directly opposite the hotel, very disappointing, would not recommend.

“Great service, good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We picked this particular hotel based entirely off its TripAdvisor rating and we weren't disappointed! I emailed the hotel a week or two before our arrival and told them of my wife's allergy to citrus based cleaner and when we arrived they had upgraded us to an 'allergy-free' room with hardwood floors because the carpet in the other rooms was cleaned with citrus products.

On our first night in the room, one of the legs of the bed broke and spilled us onto the floor, but the night manager came up himself and tried for 5 solid minutes to fix it in his suit and tie after the doorman had tried as well. They wound up finding a stack of phone books to prop us up for the night and they fixed it "good as new" while we were out the next day.

The location is pretty solid, as others have mentioned - a bit of hike to the major sights, but an easy walk to Termini station with buses that can get you anywhere. There are a number of places to eat in the immediate area so if you don't feel like going too far for dinner, you'll be all set.

We visited during the recent economic protests in the city and the staff was very helpful in telling us which locations to avoid and providing us with maps and directions to the sights. Overall, we would definitely recommend the hotel to others visiting the Eternal City!

“Reasonable Quality at Fair Price near Termini”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We stayed at this hotel for the three nights. We chose it because of the location near Termini because we arrived from Florence by train and used the train to get to the airport when we left Italy. The location met our prime requirements as it took only about ten minutes to walk to the train even dragging bags.

There are no real tourist attractions near the hotel but cetral Rome is a relatively small area and we were able to walk to all the sites we wanted to visit. About 25 minutes to Spanish Steps walking west about the same to the Colosseum walking south. Even the Vatican on the other side of the river can be reached within about 30 minutes by foot but we used the metro to come back to the hotel after our tiring visit. The Rome metro system is very easy to use.

The hotel itself was functional and perfectly adequate albeit impersonal. We had a deluxe room which was large and comfortable with a modern bathroom. Everything worked. Breakfast was served in a large room off the lobby and was consistent with the overall quality of the hotel, perfectly adequate. There's a nice bar/cafe also off the lobby where there is free wifi for hotel guests.

The reception staff were friendly and efficient and gave us a good recommendation for a local restaurant.

In summary, if you want an "okay" hotel near Termini and get a reasonable price, then this hotel is worth considering. If you want a hotel with some personality then this is not the place for you.

“Big and clean hotel by the train station”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Starhotel Metropole is a good hotel between the Termini station, the Opera and Piazza Repubbica.
It's pretty big and busy, has lots of rooms to choose from. We stayed there for 10 days in January, and enjoyed our trip.

I would not say that the hotel room met my expectations.... The rooms were not too big, and the furniture was pretty outdated... It did not feel any special at all, pretty blah...

But the staff was VERY, extremely helpful!!! The concierge service was always the best, very kind and polite, answered all the questions. They could give recommendations on the guide tours, restaurants, shopping, night life, spas, and etc. What else would a girl need? ;)

Breakfast is till 10.30 and gives lots of options to choose from. If you need something special, the very helpful waiters will bring it to you, starting from pancakes to the best cappuccino ever.

The lobby bar offers good wine selection, the bartenders are also very professional :)

WiFi is free in the lobby - the concierge will provide you with tickets with login/password for 30 minutes use (you can have as many tickets as possible). Otherwise you can use the WiFi for 5.50 Euro a day in your room.

The hotel also offers a small gym for free, parking (35 euro a day? not sure), and a business center with computers (not sure about the price).

I would highly recommend to get to the hotel from the airport by taxi, it's about 45 Euro. I would not recommend you to use the Termini subway station at all, as it's CRAAAAAAAAAZY! Its was crazy packed and I felled the crowd would push me under the train. 3 trains passed by me, and I still could not get on any of them even though I was just by the entrance to the train.

There is also the Opera/Repubblica station by the hotel, which concierge said is much better. But I was so scared of the Termini station experience, that always called taxi or walked.

In conclusion, I would recommend this hotel if you're in the city for business, it's good for it price, good location and very helpful professional staff.
Not the best choice for romantic vacation.
