“When in Rome....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

...book your room at the Hotel Locarno. I stayed at this hotel many times, with or without children, in the large suite under the roof (ideal with 2 childeren) or in a simple double or single room, it was always perfect. The ambience, the decor, the patio and the breakfast bufet, the bar and entrance....everyhing is just charming and nice and as friendly as the staff and reception. It is conveniently located and within walking distance to most of the main attractions and still surprisingly quiet at night. Highly recommended. And should you go there read my upcoming review about this extraordinary restaurant nearby!

Room Tip: with 2 kids ask for one of the suites under the roof!

“Charming central and atmospheric”

This was booked by my travel agent and I Was a bit apprehensive after reading the reviews on trip advisor! The experience was delightful. We stayed in room 606 which is an upgraded suite. Large, comfortable with windows that open which is great.
It is quiet and solo central. Just on piazza del popolo and via corso. Good for shopping and an easy pleasant walk to the trevi, Spanish steps etc.

The staff were friendly, funny and universally helpful. Housekeeping did a lovely tidy of the room. People ran bags up stairs - no issue getting us a car to the airport or using the safe.

The breakfast is lovely-basic but tasty; nice home made cake, fresh fruit eggs and cereal.

The decor is worn but in a homely comfortable bohemian way. If you like modern chic it is not for you. If you want functional, comfortable, central and friendly it is good. Glad I listened to the travel agent :-)

I would stay there again.

“Charm and class”

Umm... slightly naughty Deco feel. Divine room. Welcoming bar. Beautiful ambiance. Stunning overall. Good location. Fairly quiet (for Rome). Loved it.

Room Tip: Our room was in the older building next door. I loved it. Get ready to experience something differen...

“Charming but a few issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Hotel Locarno is a very charming hotel, beautiful old building and friendly staff. The garden bar is very cool (try the cocktails!) and visited by many locals.
Location is a strong point, it is ideal for a weekend in Rome, the best starting point for day trips and has many nice restaurants nearby. We loved the bike rental service the hotel offers, try exploring Rome by bike! Breakfast is ok.
Now the downsides: It is extremely noisy! I have a very sound sleep but didn’t get any shuteye in the first night. We had a room in the main building towards the street. Unfortunately they are cleaning the streets during the night with noisy machines and we could hear every single noise from the hallway (doors slamming etc) and other rooms. Therefore we asked to change rooms for the second night. The room we got was calmer but not nearly as nice, very old looking and the bathroom stank horribly due to an obvious sewage problem.
Conclusions: Mixed feelings. It is such a beautiful location and building, great potential so I think it just needs renovation and a few problems fixed (noise reduction etc). Stay away if you have trouble sleeping and need everything to be perfect.

Room Tip: try to get a room in the main building and away from the street, not the ground floor!

“Renovations Needed..Please Avoid!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

A travelers first impression of a hotel is usually the reception one receives upon arrival. At the Hotel Locarno Rome the people at the reception desk obviously need lessons on hospitality. Our assigned room was not only tiny, but quite dirty.....in need of paint, the white curtains were a very dark gray , the air conditioning/heating unit, which was attached to the ceiling, had pieces hanging from it and black soot radiating over the ceiling, and let's just say, yes, there was a tiny bathroom. We tried to change rooms for three days and told it was not possible....and told to us with attitude! For many of the rooms, the noise from the hotel bar and courtyard area is not for the timid or for those who want to get some sleep at a reasonable hour. I will say the included full, hot breakfast was a wonderful treat. However, had this been a first trip to Rome, we would not have a favorable impression of all that is Rome....including some of their lovely old world charm hotels. This hotel needs to be avoided until much needed renovations are made and hospitality is returned to the reception desk!
