“Still good location and friendly staff, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

We stayed at Casa San Giuseppe for 4 days in late November...three families with teens and pre-teens. Fantastic location for walking everywhere...Vatican in 20 minutes, Roman ruins in 15 minutes. Campo da Fiori in 10 minutes, great restaurants and bars everywhere. And the staff are very friendly and helpful. But the management still haven't fixed the two minor details the last reviewer mentioned. Internet rate in the lobby is still 5 euros a day (if you're staying 4 nights and paying the room rates we were paying, they could have at least thrown in free internet access) and the sign in the breakfast room still says second cup of coffee will be charged. Still recommend this hotel highly.

“Would stay there again”

Casa San Giuseppe is in a great location and is astoundingly quiet for being in a neighborhood that can be overrun with rowdy students on weekends (ask for a room facing the parking lot, which actually has a good view). You should, however, know what to expect. The building and rooms are fine, clean, not cramped, and the showers work well with lots of hot water. The only downside is the feeling that Management nickle and dimes you, and I would have paid a little more to avoid that, and it would have STILL been a bargain. Internet is 5 euros for 24 hours, which is high. But don't sign on at 11PM, because the 24 hours isn't pegged to when you sign on and you'll have to pay another 5 euros once midnight hits. There is a sign in the breakfast room that the second cup of coffee is charged. They never did charge us, but having the sign there just gives you a bad feeling towards management that isn't necessary. Don't send clothes out to wash - they don't use a dryer service so it takes days for them to get back. Breakfast isn't so good if you are trying to avoid processed flour products (which I was), but that isn't a big deal because there is a fruit store and a natural foods store less than a block away. That said, I would absolutely stay there again on my next trip to Rome. Great location and the clean, quiet rooms are, for Rome, a real treat that means a good night's sleep, and you can't beat that..

“Great location, great rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

I stayed at Casa San Giuseppe with my school group so we required a central location, good breakfasts and sound bedding. This hotel was just that! The rooms were huge and spacious with large bathrooms and wardrobes. The beds were hard but gave you a good nights rest. The windows were large and looked onto the back-streets of Rome, good because it allowed fresh air to run through the room and a cultured view. The room featured an entry foyer, room for beds (very big room!) and a large, spacious bathroom. The rooms were all spotlessly clean and the bathroom even included a heated towel rack! :)

The room was in a great location, a short walk away from some beautiful, cultured shops, the Tiber River and of course the Trevi Fountain! It's very close to bus stops for easy transport to the city centre.

The breakfasts each morning were tasty and warming.

Overall a really nice hotel, with immense space, central location and very clean.

“Good price, Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

Our stay here was not really planned, but it turned out great. On our way into Rome, from Assisi, we discovered that our B&B reservation had not been confirmed, so we had to scramble to find a hotel. We knew we wanted to still stay in the Trastevere neighborhood, so we turned to our ever-handy Rick Steves', made a phone call, and viola, we had a place to stay for our last nights in Rome.

The front desk staff speaks great English, and are very helpful with any questions we had. Breakfast was provided, and it was above average as far as most B&Bs we stayed in in Italy. The rooms were clean and spacious (although a bit austere, as it is a converted Monastery of sorts.) The rooms are modern, with a great bathroom, and plenty of closet space. The rooms were air-conditioned, however being from Texas, we prefer air-conditioning that gets the room COLD, as opposed to "a few degrees cooler than ambient temperature". But, that was our only complaint.

There are a lot of great cafe's and bar's in the area that are teeming with hip, educated, 20-30 something Italians. Try the "Bir & Fud" cafe in the square, the pizzas are amazing!

“I chose for location, doubt I'd choose again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2010

The hotel is very clean and the staff is cordial enough, although for the most part I wouldn't call them especially friendly. I chose this hotel for its location — in Trastevere, within walking distance of the main historic center of Rome, and reachable by public transport (bus 23 from Piazza Risorgimento) — and for its reasonable price. Here are my issues:

- My shower stall was TINY: I had to squeeze myself into it (I'm overweight but not huge) and be careful not to change the temperature by bumping the control while showering.
- My air conditioning didn't work well. I eventually turned it off and opened the window at night.
- Guests have to go down to the lobby to use the wireless Internet connection. There are very few outlets convenient to the seats in the lobby.
- The visual atmosphere is not at all what I'd call charming or warm. I don't find it an inviting place to hang out.

My biggest issue was that every day one of the other guests smoked in the public restroom, despite noticeable signs forbidding smoking in that area and even despite management's multiple assurances to me that they would talk to him about it. I would have liked them to be more forceful, even to the point of evicting him after nothing else worked.

Other comments: The bed was harder than I like but by no means the hardest I've had in Italy, and I slept well enough. The breakfast is neither great nor terrible, and the breakfast serving staff is friendly.
