The guides make all the difference. Very informative fun tour.
It was nice trip , and I suggust to not miss sight seeing tour you'll enjoy almost of the city
Rome worth its reputation .
On my first trip to Rome I missed a lot with the tour group passing by many sights I would love to have seen in more depth. So this time I left my group at the Vatican, which I had visited on my first trip and with map in hand walked from there heading to the Coleseum. Walking at a slow to moderate pace with lots of stops along the way and taking lots of photographs the trip took all of 4 hours as I planned to meet up with my group near the Forum. It was the best part of my seeing Rome. I highly recommend this. I also did the same type of wakling tour in Florence and found a great number of shops and restaurants along the way.
First let me say that we were extremely confused by the meeting point - they meet in front of the McDonald's at the Spanish Steps by the large column (i forget what it's called). Technically it is still the Spanish Steps, but for tourists like us, we had no idea that it was all connected.
My husband and I went on all three of the Rome Free Tours that are offered. We went on different days and had different guides each day. Unfortunately, i don't remember any of their names.
Each of the three tours lasted about an hour and a half. There were about 5-8 people in each tour. The guides walked at a leisurely pace (i wish we walked faster so we could see even more). We learned a few pieces of information on each of the tours, but i feel like we should've learned more.
Two of the three guides did mention that they work for tips. One mentioned that a "2 hour tour usually costs 30-40 euro" while the other told a story of a couple that had a tour and only left one euro. It was a little annoying to hear them, though i do understand to a point since they get paid in tips only.
I really did not like the Vatican tour guide. First, he didn't know exactly how many obelisks were around the city (but i feel he should've known this, especially since it is related to the churches!). Then, he lit a cigarette while we were walking to the next site. I asked him to blow the smoke away from me since i'm sensitive to the smell and he completely ignored me.
All-in-all, i feel like the tours were ok, but not great. However, i can't complain too much since they are free tours :)
I've been on quite a few free tours in various cities, and this one was bellow average. The tour itself covered quite a few sites (Spanish steps, Parliament, various piazzas, the Roman Forum, Colosseum), and we were given tons of information, which was great. However, the tour guide (a middle aged woman with auburn hair) made the experience less than enjoyable. She was very cold and unfriendly, never smiled, and gave the impression that she would rather be doing anything else than giving the tour. She spoke too quickly and left no opportunity for questions. She walked so quickly from site to site, never looking over her shoulder to make sure that everyone was keeping up, and people often got left behind and couldn't find the group for a while. After two people left halfway through (couldn't really blame them), she ran after them and chewed them out for not leaving a tip. I'm sure there are other guides who are better, but if you happen to get this one, better to come back another day.
