I stayed by myself at Mecenate rooms for one night. Mecenate is a gem. The owners Camilla and Marta (mother and daughter) are wonderful, efficient, friendly and basically bent-over backwards to make my stay the best. The rooms are clean, in good shape and very large (relative to European standards, although smallish compared to the United States). The place is very nice and it was very cheap (75 euros). The location is very convenient: a few steps to the Colosseum and next to a nice park with playgrounds for families. It's very easy to reach by metro, tram and buses. I actually ended up walking to Termini station, which was closer in reality than it seemed on the map. The building seems to be newly renovated. The owners let me get in my room at 7 am (long before check in) and I was allowed to leave my room late in the afternoon (long before check out). This has been by far the best place I've stayed in Rome (this was my fourth visit), and with the exception of my experiences, the best in the world (much better than the places I've stayed in Paris and New York, for a fourth of the price). Some folks complain about the noise, but relative to other places in Rome, this place is very quiet. Besides, if you're strongly bothered by noise, don't come to Rome (or Italy for that matter). Lastly, my parents stayed there and they loved it (and they're quite an old cranky couple). I look forward to coming back with wife and children.
