My wife and I stayed at Chez Gabrielle for a week in the middle of a four month trip to Europe.
Everyone seeks something unique or different when they travel. What we seek when we travel is an authentic experience - that is living the way the locals do - shopping for the day's necessities, cooking and eating at home, going to local restaurants, drinking the wine of the region, travelling by public transport and discussing the issues of the day to appreciate the local context and perspective. For this reason, when travelling for leisure, we choose to stay in proper fully-equipped apartments - such as Chez Gabrielle - not in B&Bs or hotels.
Chez Gabrielle exceeded our expectations in every respect. Located in the Labaro district, part suburban, part rural, on the northern outskirts of Rome, Chez Gabrielle is a real apartment. It is on the 7th floor of a modern apartment building among other similar apartment buildings. A supermarket is only five minutes walk away as is the local weekly street market, bar and pizza shop. From the balcony of the apartment one can view hills on the northern perimeter of Rome, new apartment blocks under construction in adjacent sub-divisions, boys playing soccer, planes approaching the airport many kilometres away, and people travelling to work by car or by bus. Even the odd rooster can still be heard in the early hours of the morning. As another reviewer has commented it is a great place to relax at the end of the day. The apartment is spotless, attractive and ideally suited to a couple. Breakfast supplies are provided and there are laundry facilities - just what every traveller needs.
The hosts Dino and Daniela (and their two young boys) live in a similar apartment next door. It is wonderful to be met by Dino at the airport upon arrival and he and Daniela are always available if you need assistance or advice. They will prepare a fantastic home cooked meal for you if requested. They are very open people and enjoy discussing issues pertaining to life in Italy and life generally. They are truly wonderful hosts as others on Trip Advisor have attested to. For us this had added significance. I unfortunately broke my ankle in France six weeks before and needed a plaster cast. Dino not only organised medical appointments and drove us twice to a regional hospital but also made sure we understood the billing arrangements and interpreted for us during medical consultations. This was an enormous relief as neither of us speak Italian. Dino also drove us to pharmacies, banks and to the local rail station to make things easier for us.
Dino and Daniela and their boys welcomed us into their lives. We hope we can repay their hospitality if ever they visit Australia in the future.
