We arrived in Rome after a very late flight from LA and a non existent transfer from Rome airport, so when we finally found a mini bus and arrived, it was late, we were tired. We also didn't realise that checkin was at the Hotel Oxford, about 2 streets away, which we didn't have the address to. Luckily the Cabbie knew the hotel. Bad start in Rome.
Late at night, with graffiti covered shutters over the shop windows beneath the apartments, we anticipated the worst.
What a surprise when we got there. We had a 2 bedroom apartment in a quaint refurbished building, marble floors, effective airconditioning (needed in 36 degree heat), 2 clean modern bathrooms, a kitchenette and whilst not in the absolute centre of Rome, was right near bus stops and a 10-15 minute walk from metro stations at Termini or Repubblica. Whilst over a reasonably busy street, the blackout and soundproof shuutters were extremely effective. Right near reasonable restaurants and running distance from the big park at Villa Borghese(which contains the zoo and other interesting areas). I think a lap of this park from the apartment and back was about 10km however this park goes to near the top of the spanish steps and has a restaurant, and is also a lovely place for a picnic-which we did.
Apartments were brilliant and great value for Rome. The big front door and multiple keys, plus the elevator limited to 3 people were the only minor drawbacks, but they were minor and inconsequential. I woul stay there again in a heartbeat.
