I have just returned from a 2 week stay in Rome which I probably would have canceled due to the global meltdown if I had not been staying at a reasonably priced lodging. Fortunately I was and can highly recommend it as a way to have a great stay in Rome without sacrificing comfort or quality.
You can book directly with the B&B or through one of the bed and breakfast lodging sites for Italy/Rome. My stay was 55 Euros/night because my stay was lengthy.
I stayed at La Papera Bed&Breakfast which is located in the Garbatella neighborhood of Rome. It is conveniently located close to the Garbatella Metro station and shops and services.
The accomodation is a room with double bed in a private apartment. building on a cul-de-sac street. There is double glazing of the windows but it is a quiet location anyway. The room and the apartment are very attractively furnished and the room has its own bathroom. The breakfast is varied with cereal, juice, different kinds of breads and any special request like yogurt or cheese will be provided if you ask Federica Sanò the lovely owner of the apartment.
There are maps and travel info about Rome in the bureau in the bedroom and Federica can answer any transportation/sightseeing questions you might have.
This was my first trip to Rome and had I not had Federica's advice I might have been overwhelmed by the hectic pace of the Eternal City. Staying in a residential neighborhood was a good introduction to the Eternal City for me.
I would not hesitate to recommend this lodging for anyone who is a new or return visitor to Rome.
