“Brilliant B&B, friendly italian owner and great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

Salvador B&B was great. George is really friendly and went out of his way to help us, telling us of the best places to eat and helping us with airport transportation. He also was very patient when we arrived at 1am from our flight! It is true that he doesn't speak much English, but then it is Italy! Anyway, even with very little knowledge of Italian we managed fine. Location is excellent - 5 minutes to the Vatican city. We really liked the way it wasn't a completely toresty area as we got to see a bit of the real Rome and it was close to the main areas and tube if you wished. Our room was very spacious and clean with a lovely balcony. Breakfast was pastries and tea or coffee every morning. I never ever bother to write reviews but I thought he was so lovely that it should really make the effort. Ruth & Mat

Great place to stay. If you like sweet breakfast you will love it even more.
But the most important is the real Italian friendly owner. He is always ready to help so you want be disappointed if you stay there.

“Great location, Excellent Value, Friendly service”

My partner and I stayed here for a couple of days last summer. The owner doesn't speak any english at all but he is gregarious and super friendly. It's certainly one of the best B&B's in Europe when you consider the location, money, room and friendly service. We can highly recommend it.

“you get what you pay for”

myself and my partner and another couple went to rome in february for a CHEAP break away and chose the salvador as it was in our budget. we read previous reviews and as there was no terrible ones we decided to book. we didint have any high expectations before we arrived and didnt really know what to expect but figured as we were only in rome for 5 days we wouldnt be spending much time in the hotel other than to sleep and shower. we arrived at the airport and our first thought was to get a taxi, but as the hotel is slightly outside the border for a 30euro taxi the driver thought it would be about 50/60. So we decided on public transport. we bought a 7 day bus tram and metro pass for 16euro which got us to the hotel and done us for the rest of the week (i would truly recommend one to get around). when we arrived at the hotel we dragged our luggage up about 5 floors- the lift looked very dodgy, but never used the stairs again the lift was fine!!!! George the owner was there to welcome us, his english is terrible and our italian was non existent but funnily enough we managed to communicate no problem! the rooms were nice and spacious with en suite, the decor is a bit of a mis match but to be honest that was not an issue! george indicated breakfast was between 8-10 and we should knock on his door when we required it! the pastries were very tasty as was the coffee and fruit juice. he was more than happy to give more pastries if required.

the only problem we did have was on our 2nd last day he came through to our room in an awful fluster speaking in italian....he looked awfully destressed. he made a phonecall and passed me the phone! it turned out one of the booking companies had double booked a room and asked if for our last night we could all share one room. I spoke to the booker asking what we would be refunded and george gave us 45euro. We were quite happy to share and goerge rearranged our room to accomodate 2 double beds. That night he brought us a bottle of red wine, a take away pizza and a big italian salami type sausage. he was most grateful we had shared but to be honest i have no idea how he would of told the new guests why he didnt have a room so we felt a bit sorry for him. George was a great host and although communication was tricky we got by. i would genuinely reccomend the salvador to other travellers on a budget as long as you aint expecting the ritz!! my ratings are based on THAT accommadation and not on your typical 5 star hotel. it is very safe and secure and in an ideal location for all tourist attrations and a metro. If you interested in the football, the boys went to lazio and roma games and the stadio olimpico is within walking distance. Our hardest task was finding where to buy the tickets so just in case you do want to get tickets you buy the lazio ones in the lazio store which is very close the the ottaviano metro station and the roma tickets in the roma store which is very close to the trevi fountain, best metro stop for that is spagna, spanish steps.....hope this helps everyone have a fantastic stay....we miss rome!!!

“Overrated”

Salvador is quite a disappointment for myself....perhaps because of the high expectation I had due to the positive review of this hotel.

I wouldn't recommend this place to travelers who are unfamiliar with Rome and who can't speak Italian, as the owner couldn't converse in English. To be fair, I was fully aware that he can't speak English, but did not expect it to be such a hassle. Even communicating the time that breakfast would be prepared was difficult, much less about asking for available transport we can opt for to certain places around Rome. Those who expect to meet other travelers in the hostel can also forget about it....the owner was ticked off every time we strike a conversation with other guests, to the extent that he scolded and ordered us to return to our room on several occasions. We were also ticked off that he would knock on our room door and barge in to off the light in the bathroom whenever it's on...despite us explaining that we need to use the washroom. On occasions that these incidents happened, yes, we were greatly annoyed to the extent that we have considered to move out. The only thing holding us back was the hassle to find another decently priced hostel.

However, if you do not mind the occasional intrusion of the owner on your freedom of speech ;) and the fact that it is not professionally run, this hostel really what you have paid for. It is cheap, and despite the initial impression that its location is not ideal, the hostel is actually very near to a busy area of Rome and to a metro. The other good thing is that despite the high level of annoyance that the owner posed, he is a honest fella...and as such we felt safe staying here (as opposed to certain places whereby owners keep bugging you to spend on tours etc).

Personally, if I were to come back to Rome, I will spend an extra 20 euro or so per night for a better, more professionally-run alternative. If you have a strict budget however, this hostel may be an option - but just make sure that you do not have any expectations at all.
