“When in Rome... Stay at Balbo Inn”
I stopped through Rome with a film crew this past October on our way to Chernobyl Ukraine, already a little disappointed that we only had one night in the ancient city. There was so much to see, and time wasn't on our side. As we checked into the Cesare Balbo Inn, we were greeted by a small Asian man named Glen standing behind the front desk. His gripping personality and warm smile was immediate confirmation we had booked the right hotel.
He gave us a quick rundown on the city and what to do to make the most of our tight schedule. And within minutes we found ourselves not wanting to leave, the four of us crammed inside the small hotel lobby, laughing and singing while Glen picked away at an old guitar.
After an amazing day in Rome and a long night on the town, we woke to the sound of Glen knocking at the door with breakfast. It was a little past 4:00 in the morning, and the personal wake up call came with a smile was no dimmer than the day before. But as we packed up and rushed out the door to catch our next flight, I couldn't help but think to myself...
Even with all the incredible sights to see, it's still the people you meet along the way that make the biggest mark on your life. So while I walked away from Rome with a few good pictures of some really old buildings, it was the small Asian man with a guitar at the Cesare Balbo Inn that I'll remember the most. And every time I return to Rome it's just like coming home.
The hotel itself was very nice, clean and safe. A beautifully quaint Italian bed and breakfast, within walking distance of the Colosseum. The perfect place to experience Rome for the first time.
