We decided to try this B&B mainly because of the price, OK reviews and location close to the Vatican. Even though we used a cab to get to the hotel, because of the late arrival, there are couple of bus connections to the B&B from the city centre. Also there is S. Pietro train station not very far away from the B&B (about 10 minute walk).
As we arrived late at night, I sent a message to the owner (Marino) while we were at the airport and he responded quickly. From Ciampino airport it's about 30 minute taxi drive to the B&B (at night only, as our taxi driver was driving easily over 150km/h on the motor way). Marino was there, waiting for us and we got us quickly to bed.
The B&B has four rooms, all named after Rome's attractions. Our double room was called Colosseo and had it's own bathroom. I believe that two rooms are using a shared bathroom in the corridor and the other two are ensuits. You should definitely skip the double room with shared bathroom, as it seems to be very small and has no window view - also this room has no direct access to the terrace. The terrace is used for breakfasts, but you can actually access it only from three rooms, that means that the owner and the guests from the other double room will have to walk through one of the rooms for the breakfast. It's a bit confusing in the beginning when you see other guests entering your room while you are at the breakfast. The breakfast itself is served on two tables, so you will get to know your neighbours very well - especially in the beginning I felt a bit uncomfortable to sit with everyone at the same table. For the breakfast (from 8 to 9:30) you will get only coffee, tea, juice, one yoghurt, one croissant, one bread and jams. Definitely was not enough for me, so we had to buy for instance fruits, more yoghurt and some cheese to put on the bread. Again, it's a bit akward to have your own food, while you sit at the same table with others. Despite the poor breakfast, terrace is a nice place to be in the mornings.
After a week of stay at the B&B I can mention also following plusses:
The staff is really nice, Marino does not speak English well, but he tries hard. From him you can get instructions on how to get to the most of the attractions. There's a common kitchen, which is well-equipped and tidy. We liked our tidy double room ensuite, clean bathroom, air-condition, flat TV, comfy bed, room size and Wi-Fi. Also there are couple of small supermarkets nearby (Carrefour Extra and Euro Spin), but you may find a bigger Carrefour behind the S. Pietro train/bus station at the Via delle Fornaci. An ATM is in front of the house, good take away pizzeria (used by locals only) downstairs (Pollie), also an old-fashion but cute local food market nearby. In overall, we liked the area, as it is not so touristy but felt totally safe, bus stop in front (easy to go to the downtown, but way harder to find back to the B&B). The Vatican is just 10 minute walk away, the Vatican museum can be reached in about 25 minutes by foot.
The buses, which are connected with the B&B are: 982, 571, 916 and 190 (Sundays only). Also the Pickpocket Express, a bus number 64, stops at the S. Pietro train station (easy access to the Termini). The 982 goes from the Ottaviano metro station to the B&B. You can also try to walk to the metro station, as we did it couple of times, it takes around 30 minutes to get there. The good thing is that with the same ticket you can use both buses and metro, so it's not that hard to reach the B&B after all, but it will take some time. However, for us, the location was pretty good.
And now the minuses:
The B&B has very weak noise isolation and we had a leaking shower (you get water all over the floor in the bathroom). Also our boiler was leaking and water drop noise was annoying (the owner put a small bucket to collect water... come on, fix it!). As the noise isolation is very weak, you will hear very well, if someone speaks on the terrace or even in its own room during the quiet hours. Also there is a shared bathroom and kitchen just in front of the ensuite in the corridor and it gets noisy when people shower or make food during the quiet hours. Definitely get your earplugs with you, if you are a sustainable sleeper! In the morning (around 8) the breakfast preparations in the kitchen will wake you up for sure. Towels will not be changed every day and when I asked for new towels, the owner replied via Google Translate message that it's not a four-star hotel and something on how expensive the laundry is - that was the only bad experience with Marino. In overall, your experience depends on your neighbours and how noisy they are. We had an American speaking on the phone every night on the terrace and I could hear his conversations (and couldn't sleep), before I got earplugs for me.
Couple of tips:
- If you are going to the Galleria Borghese, take bus 916 to the stop Piazza del'Oro (5 minutes), then at the corner of Lungotevere dei Sangallo and Largo dei Fiorentini take a small electric bus number 119 to the Borghese (check the StreetView, the bus is there), I think it's the last stop of the ride. It's a very cool bus trip (of course, if not crowded), which will take you around the old town and finally to the Borghese.
- When you leave the B&B, cross the street, turn right and walk about two minutes and you will find a local food market selling fresh fruits. Cheap and tasty.
