“Monthy Python would pray to stay here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

How do I start... 2 friends and myself embarked on a Europe tour that took us to Rome and this place. We booked it on Expedia and in all honesty were ill prepared for what was awaiting us. In retrospect it's a funny story to tell but going through it there was anything but...

The booking said ensuite bathroom, well such a thing does not exist. In the end I was so insistent on having our own bathroom that the hostel guy gave us the key to one of the bathrooms but he did his level best to get it back, I felt like I was in a Monthy Python scene and this was just the beginning... after finally securing the bathroom we realised that the windows can't be closed properly and even if they can, it's no good as there is no ventilation in the room. So we had to choose between suffocation or going deaf from the maddening traffic that was going on all night below our little hell of a room. About the bed sheets: I never knew artificial satin existed but the Italians mastered the art of producing it... and that too in neon blue/yellow. I was expecting the movie crew to jump out of the corner and say this is a joke but it wasn't. I think it's sort of self-explanatory that we never had any food at this place. I took a quick look at the kitchen and that itself was enough to go on a 3-day hyper diet.

The final blow was the way we left. We had a very early morning flight to Madrid and had to wake up at 5am. We researched that there is a 30EUR taxi to Ciampino airport but Rome being Rome we asked our landlord to book it for us as we feared we would be ending up paying 100EUR. The poor guy wanted to make sure we leave his place and his bathroom so to make that sure he entered our room at 445am dressed in blue briefs, madly articulating. The whole scene reminded me of John Cleese in a Fish Called Wanda but I was in such a state of shock I couldn't utter a word. We left and I really really do hope I'd never be back to this place again in my life.

“Don't go here!”

Don't stay here! They have bed bugs and the place is really dirty. I booked September 23-28 here and I could only stay one night because it was really gross and I got bitten by bed bugs. When I arrived the person who greeted me was drunk as well and they don't speak very good english. They also didn't give me my money back, I paid for September 23-28 and I only stayed for a night so simple math would state that they owe me money, but they didn't give my money back.

“below average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

we booked Astro but were moved to Cherry hostel across the street. Poor English of the staff, charged us with Roman local tax (2 euros per person per night!). Luckily we stayed only one night and it was close to Termini (10 min walk). Room very hot, no air conditioning but clean sheets and towels.

“Warning: Fleas”

I was on a school trip to Rome. When we arrived at Astro Hostel, there was nobody to help us. We had to wait for half an hour. After that, we were told that they overbooked, we were sent to a flat on 5-high. The persons who showed us the rooms said he had nothing to do with this and knew very little English. His favourite words were 'I don't know'. The room I was shown was not cleaned after the last inhabitants. The basket was still full of waste, the toilet was very dirty. But the most awful moment was when I lifted the bed blanket: There were bloodstains on my sheet. I asked for another one and he gave me a new blanket. Unfortunately, this new blanket had really large brown stains on it, like it had lain on the ground for ages. Taking a shower was not easy since it overflowed within minutes. Breakfast is very, very easy: just some toast and a jar of chocolate paste, some cookies, coffee, tea. Sometimes we had the luxury of marmalade and milk. The plates in the cabinet were all very sticky and had the food of the former users still on it. I tried the plastic cups, but when I found a dead bug in it I've put it back. When I got home I discovered red, itchy patches on my skin. I informed and the people whom I travelled with had it too. We have done some research and discovered this were marks left by bed bugs. Well, the only positive thing I can tell about this hostel is that it is very close to Termini so you can escape very easily.

Room Tip: Do not agree when you are sent to another building

“RUN AWAY!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011

Do NOT stay here!!!! They try to charge you a hostel tax fee, which does NOT exist in Rome for HOSTELS! It exists for Bed and Breakfasts, campsites, nicer hotels, but NOT for hostels! They will charge you 2 more euros every night for every person who stays there. Which is clearly a scam!

They WILL overbook, and if that is the case you will be sent to their other hostels Sunny Guest House (where I ended up staying because they overbooked) and Cherry Hostel. One night they even overbooked so much, a poor American guy had to sleep on the dirty couch in the common room, and they still wanted him to pay!

It was incredibly dirty, I came back to visit after I had checked out, and when they were checking in new people, and they still had not changed the sheets from when I stayed there. Makes you wonder if they have ever cleaned or changed the sheets!

Horrible experience, worst hostel I have ever been to, even for the price (I have seen better hostels for cheaper in Rome).

Room Tip: Might be worth it to stay just outside of Rome.
