“a home away from home at a great price”

I stayed four nights at BB Marlu in the single room with shared bathroom. The room has a comfy single bed, desk and wardrobe to unpack your clothes as well as a little side table and portable air-con unit. Share bathroom is lovely and spacious with shower over bath and I never experienced a conflict with the others sharing the facilities.

As everyone has stated Marlene is extremely welcoming taking the time to explain many things about Rome and show you how to get around. Marlene keeps guests company over a delicious breakfast of croissant, quality bread, yoghurt and coffee/tea to your taste. Marlene herself is an avid traveller and is genuinely interested in meeting her guests and exchanging stories. BB Marlu is close to two metro stations and a bus services that are simple to use.

Unfortunately during my stay the weather turned incredibly hot and the portable aircon struggled to provide as much relief as a normal reverse cycle system but with all the shutters closed the B&B still provided a cool oasis to return to when the heat got unbearable in the middle of the afternoon.

I left some clothes and jewellery behind and Marlene kindly posted them to a forwarding address for me and refused to accept any payment when I offered.

I definitely recommend BB Marlu for women travelling alone who want a safe, secure place to stay and any travellers looking for a more personable experience than an anonymous hotel.

However if you are someone who is severely affected by the heat I wouldn't advise staying in the hottest part of summer.

“Marlene is sweet, but the location isn't great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2011

This is truly a B&B. It is a residence converted into a B&B. Marlene was really nice and is great to chat to, but if you're looking for luxury, this is not it. The location of the B&B is near great gelato place and is close to Termini and lots of Chinese restaurants, but the area in general seems pretty dodgy. The rooms really need some air conditioning - all we had was a noisy old fan, so we were pretty hot. The room was fine though and it was clean and spacious. Marlene is also kind to let you use the internet and treat it like your home. This is much more like a home experience. Also, it was extremely noisy from the street.

“Marlene was an amazing host loved our stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

We traveled with 4 children to this B&B and rented all three rooms. Marlene was a wonderful host we felt we were visiting family in Rome. We had a very long trip and only two days in Rome she was able to give us a map and help us plan out all the details with insider tips for tickets etc that really helped when traveling with 4 kids. We rode the metro and the bus all very easy from this B&B. walking to main attractions was about 15 min as well, you get to see more if you walk it! We walked to the train to Venice the last day as well with our luggage we all only had one piece so it was easy if you had more you may want to cab. The BEST gelato we had in our 14 day stay was right around the corner. Marlene was smart to point us there first.
The area reminds me of the lower east side of NY, real Rome residents not touristy which is what we like. Marlene sent her husband and dog to meet us one night off the bus (we got back late) to be sure we found it OK but it was an easy walk from metro and Bus stop she just went the extra mile. Rooms were beautiful and breakfast was very nice. THANKS Marlene the kids are still talking about the expresso and their apartment in Rome you made the start of our vacation an easy transition to the Italian way of life.

“Good bb, but will not come back”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

It was a good bb, the location is nice, the owner is very friendly, she picked up us from the intersection and explains the tips in Rome. However, with hot weather and no air conditioning in the room, we barely sleep in the two night's stay. I rather pay more to get a cool room next time.

I'm really sorry that you had a hard time sleeping. I remember perfectly when you came, it was end of June and I had already started to put the air-conditioning in the other two rooms, you could have asked me as you saw that the others had air-conditioning to put it also in your room. I would have done it immediatly if I knew, The day you came the air was still fresh, so as I need some time to put the airconditioning, I decided to put it after you went away. I think you were a bit unlucky. However I thank you about this review, so I can tell my future guests, that unless it is very hot, I usually instal airconditioning end of June beggining of July. Of course if my guests ask me before, I will be happy to make them happy :-)

“Excellent B&B. Will definitely recommend it to all my Aussie friends.”

Thanks Marlene. This place was terrific and a great way to start our long trip in Europe. We were greeted like old friends at the door, arriving 830am after a 12 hour flight. Our room was ready so we were invited to unpack, shower and move in straight away. Ours was the room with the double bed, couch bed and ensuite bathroom. It was roomy, clean and quiet.

Marlene gave us the talk about Rome, complete with map. What to see, where to go, how to get on the nearest Metro train. It was 5 mins walk to the metro train, and tickets are $1 Euro for 1 trip, but can be used on buses for up to 75 mins also.

The daily breakfast started at 830, consisted of rolls, croissant, yoghurt and of course coffee. A good way to start the day with other guests (but there are only 3 rooms, so the place was never crowded). Marlene was very interested to hear where we had visited and gave tips on where to go next if we had questions.

There was a computer for guests, or wifi if you have a laptop or smart phone. This was easy to use and very helpful. Overall a great place to stay.
