“Excellent price, excellent service, back of beyond”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2005

If you have a car, this is the hotel for you; if not, be prepared to trek 30 mins in every direction to get to the nearest Metro / Restaurant / Bank etc. These guys were tripping over themselves to be helpful - the rooms are excellently furnished, the breakfast buffet good by any standards, the free WiFi was fine - we enjoyed 4 days here, and the immediate area is pretty good by Naples standards (i.e. crap beyond belief, watch out for the dog mess on the pavement etc).

Getting into and out of Naples, Pompeii, Cuma or anywhere involves either a 20 min taxi ride (€10, or €20 if you take the "Hotel Car") or a 30 min trek to the Metro and then a 30 min train ride from the midle of nowhere to the middle of nowhere. Don't take the latter option, even though ti only costs €1.

The Pozzuoli / Bagnoli area is a dive with few decent restaurants and some fairly dingy streets; nothing dangerous, but nothing nice either. Travel 20 mins in any direction and the world opens up, and we particularly enjoyed Capri. Pompeii is great, but a pig to get to from the Autostrade.

If we went back to Naples, we'd stay here again. This is an oasis in a human cesspit.

“too many preconceptions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2005

naples and this hotel turned out to be a great place for a short holiday.

I had heard that it wasn't the ideal tourist spot, was very unwelcoming, too busy, dirty and even dangerous. Apart from the fact that there is a lot of litter around i found most of the preconceptions to prove very unrealistic. It is rich in culture and history (pompeii and vesuvius well worth the trip) and the people are warm and welcoming and mostly speak english. It is busy, but you get used to it and it is important to keep a close eye on your stuff in areas like the stations, but is not a great deal different to any other southern european cities in those respects.

As for the hotel,it was modern, clean, cheap and the staff were very helpful.breakfast was good and the room facilities excellent.True, it is a bit out of the way,but you can get a more localised metro pretty close(on the circumflegrea to edenlandia) and the streets are well lit. definately buy an artecard pass as soon as you can as it is cheap and will cover all the museams, your travel(metro and bus)and one return trip on the ferry to sorrento.

Above all not a relaxing holiday but an adventure well worth it.

“Be prepared for a trek”

Would definitely agree with the comments made by the previous reviewers regarding the inconvenient location of this hotel. Definitely NOT "2km from historic city centre" as one website claimed. Actually last but one stop on Metro line (approximately half an hour from the central station), plus a further 20-30 minutes walk through a not particularly pleasant area.
Hotel itself is quite good value - clean with reasonable facilities. Not particularly friendly or helpful staff, but certainly no worse than other places we've visited. Stay here if you're on a budget, or if you have your own transport - otherwise be prepared for a lot of travelling!

“Okay hotel, but bad location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2004

This hotel (located on Via Terracina) would be absolutely great, were it not for the unfortunate location. It was very clean, friendly staff, comfortable room with air conditioning, internet access, and a good breakfast. BUT... if you're looking to explore and see Naples, this hotel is not convenient. The nearest train station is not a bad walk during the day, but doesn't feel very safe at night. The hotel staff didn't give clear directions on getting around, so I would have had even more trouble had I not run into another english-speaking guest who was familiar with the local transportation options. As a woman traveling alone (never having been to Naples and not speaking much Italian), my options were either taking an expensive taxi from the city or trying to get back to the hotel early enough so as to feel safe walking on poorly lit streets from the train station. Even the nearest restaurant requires an unpleasant walk down a dark street littered with garbage and stray dogs... just didn't feel at all safe at night. It takes a good 30-45 minutes to make it into Naples from the hotel, and longer if your timing with the trains/bus is off. I might consider staying here again if I were traveling with other people. It is a good value for the price, but keep in mind that there is a tradeoff for location.

“Small and friendly”

Stayed at San Paolo for a week at the beginning of April '04. Lovelyt small friendly hotel, very clean with very helpful staff.
There is a small restaurant athough we only had breakfast (which was varied and fresh). The hotel is quite a walk from the station and takes a while to find so a taxi is probably a good idea the first time.
Lots of cafes and restuarants in the local vacinity. Travelling by train is by far the best option. 2 euro's from the airport out to the train station and then 1 euro to Fleagrea. We had a great time, would definately recommend.
