This is probably the first Accor Group hotel I wouldn’t recommend to anyone to stay in. As an Accor Club Gold Card member, I have become accustomed to the exceptional hotels in the Accor Chain. But sadly, I must say, this hotel doesn’t fit the bill.
Let me tell you the good parts of the hotel first so that you will not feel so bad about the hotel at the beginning itself. The hotel has exceptional staffs that help you in every which way. They provide you maps and suggestions on what to see and how to proceed to that area. The hotel also has free wifi which is very good and very fast. The coverage inside the hotel is excellent and doesn’t break. The username and password given at the check-in is valid for 3 hours. After that expires, you need to go to the reception to get a recharge card, which will be valid for a further 10 hours. Once it expires, recharge again for 10 hours and so on… The hotel is located very close to the Central Railway Station in Piazza Garibaldi and if you are catching a train this is very easy. It is also easy to get to the hotel from the Airport via the Alibus for 3 Euros.
Now we come to the bad parts of the hotel. The hotel is very very old… The ground floor reception area is probably the only refurbished part of the hotel. The room itself puts you out immediately. First of all it is small. Then the carpet is stained a lot or has worn out its initial color due to age. The walls of the room are stained with what look like coffee spilt on the walls. No one has bothered to clean or repaint the room. The bathroom is very dirty and some of the tiles are broken and some of them are turning black.
The worst part of the hotel is that there is nothing to eat at the hotel except the morning breakfast that will be brought from their other hotels in Naples I think. So you have to venture out for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that Piazza Garibaldi is a dodgy area and beggers, drunks and dangerous looking people are ever present at night in this area. If you go out to dinner then you feel very unsafe while getting back to the hotel passing all these people. As a solo traveler, I did not carry much cash and kept to myself and was saved some unpleasantness. But I do not think that a family, group of girls or a couple will feel much safe getting back to the hotel at night. There is a bar at the hotel and the website says that it is open in the night. But according to the front desk it is not so and the bar is closed always. The receptionist was kind enough to get me a beer from the bar for the two nights that I was there. Else I would have been even more disappointed.
One other thing is that as the hotel is next door to the railway station, you feel a lot of vibrations every time a train passes through. There is no noise, but you definitely feel the vibrations. The first time, I thought it was an earthquake and got quite scared.
I do not know if this is the standard of all hotels in Naples or how this hotel can be called a star hotel. I would definitely not stay here when I am in Naples again. For the first time, I was disappointed on choosing an Accor Hotel. This hotel should drop the Mercure name as Mercure generally implies a higher standard of hotels like the Mercure Grand in Warsaw and maybe Accor should drop this hotel from their chain and relocate the excellent staff to their other hotels.
