“Avoid Naples Altogether!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

The hotel reception staff was semi-helpful and low energy and it felt that we were bothering them with questions. We had to park our rental car down a dark alley in a garage, which was fine and worth it, but scary neighborhood. Interesting room - we entered to a balcony and walked down to the sleeping area - a separate bedroom with bathroom and a sitting area with pull out couch and another bathroom. Since there were 3 of us, this was very cool. Although a km to the ferry port, we were encouraged to walk rather than taxi, with our luggage. After 45 mins of sweating, we swore we'd never stay here again.

“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2009

Very tiny hotel, but on the whole the people were lovely. However when you check-in, first impressions aren't all that good what with the grumpy man behind the desk. But everyone else was lovely.
Our mistake was that we booked a room with a "french double bed"....which what we didn't know at the time was only slightly larger then a single. But after a while the grumpy man decided to give us a room with a bigger bed.
The location of the hotel is quite good if you like to explore on foot, but there are good buses running up and down the road outside that go to the more central area for sightseeing in naples. The area that the hotel is in is the historical centre and lovely to wader around.
I must reccomend trattoria medina, which is a lovely restaurant on the via medina ( which you'll find is quite a main street). The service there was fantastic, and make sure you ask for the traditional Neapolitan starters which aren't on the menu. All the locals were having these and we asked for some, they were delicious!
Another lovely aspect of this hotel is that at breakfast you all sit around one table and you have the chance to chat with the other people staying in the hotel.
All in all it was a nice hotel, but I think if I went back to naples I'd stay in a larger hotel either in the centre or on the seafront. But very good value for money.

“Good value central hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2008

As other reviewers have noted, this is not really a 4-star hotel. But it doesn't charge 4-star prices. It is a very good 2/3 star experience.

The hotel is central. It is air conditioned and has private bathrooms. My room was small, but clean and has a phone, internet connection point and TV. None of these are givens in my experience of Neapolitan hotels.

The breakfast was decent with a choice of bread, jam, meat, cheese, pastries, cereal and yogurt. There is also, since this is Italy, a wide choice of coffees made to order.

The staff were helpful about seeing local sights and leaving luggage in the hotel after check out.

The main downside is that since this hotel is in central Naples it is *not quiet*. They have clearly done their best with double glazed windows and external shutters, but Naples is noisy and so is the hotel. Bring earplugs. You will be fine.

  • Liked — Good price, helpful staff, central location
  • Disliked — The noise from the street.

“Short hop!”

Had two nights in this hotel. Found the staff very friendly and helpful. Coffee and buns provided free of charge whenever requested. Room was small but clean and comfortable with a pretty painting of the bay of Naples on the wall. Location was central but quite "dodgy" however I didnt really see a part of Naples (either this trip or previous) that didnt feel a bit dodgy! (Rubish problem also abounds the city although this is no reflection on Hotel). Rates were very reasonable also cheap mini-bar! Would recomend it.

“A nice hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2006

The Esedra is a nice 3 star hotel in probably not a great area of town. The hotel is well maintained and the staff are most accomodating and helpful. The room was clean but not that large. We had two beds in our room and unfortunately the one bed had a definite lean to it. This, however, was a minor item. The real issue with this hotel is its location. Approximately, a 10-15 walk from the train station, the area is seedy. Walking along the sidewalks to the hotel, you feel like you are walking a gauntlet. Store fronts are on one side and street hawkers on the other side. It makes for a narrow passage. When we left the hotel at night to have dinner and asked if it was safe, we were checked to see if we were wearing jewelery and then pronounced that we were okay. Combined with this, there was garbage strike occuring while we were in Naples. Huge piles of garbage on the street are not very inviting.
Botttom line is if you are staying around the train station, the Esedra is good place. It is the City of Naples that needs to get its act together.
