I can't commend this hotel enough. It is the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in in Italy. Lovely bathroom, fresh towels every day and a fabulous and friendly staff.
It's a bit tricky to find from the train station. The ALIBUS from the airport takes 30 minutes. You can buy the tickets aboard the bus. Ask for Napoli central. In front of you is an absolute maze of streets. You need to get across (safely) and head to about 10 o'clock from where you are. I can't remember the name of the giant shop on the corner, but it starts with an 'M', you'll see it. At the 'M' shop, there are two roads, take the right fork and keep walking until you see a pair of women/lion statues - that's the front of the university. Turn right and walk up (steep), keep on the right hand side. On the left you will see Carrefour (supermarket) and a few other shops. Suddenly a little café set back is on the left hand side and the hotel is tucked in there. Cross over, and you'll see a small neon light. Buzz and give name. Go through gate, turn left and walk to end. Go up stairs, take lift, fourth floor. When you go out, just before the gate, on the left hand side down an 'alley' is a red switch, that's your buzzer.
Nearby - come out of the gate, turn left, walk to the top and turn left again. Keep walking and there are fabulous pizzerias and Gay Odin, a gorgeous ice cream parlour established in 1894. Peroni, by the way, in the takeaway pizzerias, cost us a euro each and giant slices of pizza 2 euros. Yum and cheap!
To get to Pompeii and Ercolano (Herculaneum), you need to walk back to where the bus dropped you. Keep walking away from bus stop, seemingly the world's longest walkway to the train station. Go underground and head for the Circumvensia - Sorrento. About 4 euros to get to Pompeii - you need a day's ticket. It's about 30 minutes away and it's directly by the train station. We also took the public bus, they hang around the train station to Vesuvius, which we climbed and had a glass of red wine at the top 1 euro 50! The cost of that trip was about 11 euros. Pompeii was about 10 euros to get in, under 18s get a child's entrance if EU member. Ercolano is closer to Napoli and if like me, you love all things vintage, it has an incredible market. The historical site isn't far from the station and the directions lead you through the market, but actually it's at the bottom of the hill from the station. Again 10 euros or so for entrance.
By the way, I was a little intimidated by Naples' reputation, I heard about hacking off hands for jewellery. Hotel Europeo is in a student area and we didn't see much in the way of the 'infamous' scooter boys, however we played safe. I stuffed my money in my bra and we only took small backpacks!
Many Neapolitans do not speak much English and were much happier conversing in French. I wish I could speak Italian.
Have a fabulous holiday and we will definitely be returning to Hotel Europeo.
Room Tip: Right by reception was where we are. We didn't experience any noise issues.
