I paid a very reasonable rate for seven days, and requested a smoking room facing the street. On arrival I was told the hotel was now non-smoking - the explanation being the installation of alarms. Another correspondent has suggested the interior was smoking, and the piles of fag-ends in the interior courtyard would suggest this is tolerated, though obviously not a nice view. I smoked off my balcony with the curtains closed, obviously not throwing dog-ends into the street. I felt a bit guilty, but not much, as my request for a smoking room had not been queried.
The hotel itself could do with a lot of paint in the interior, and I didn't have the breakfast. Its great attraction is the location, with the station nearby and the No 1 tram stop to the Molo Beverello (docks for Ischia and Capri) outside. There are excellent pizzerias round the corner and a Polish supermarket 100 meters away if you want to buy snacks for your room. The area outside seems much less plagued by prostitutes and beggars than it was three years ago.
The room was clean, the bed was made every day and the sheets changed during the week. The TV had four clear Italian and one German channel, and three fuzzy but audibly clear other Italian channels. In the bathroom there was a functional sink, hair-dryer, toilet and bidet with shower gel, soap, 'intimate cleanser' (I didn't dare try this nor know where to use it) and towels, which were changed every day. The shower was hot, if a bit squirty, and the knob dropped off once. Staff do walk in without knocking if you have a lie-in. I used the avialable hair-dryer socket to recharge my phone. Shutting the window cuts out 90% of the noise of the Piazza Garibaldi outside.
The first two floors seem to be let long-term to Africans, and this seems to be a trend among the hotels in the area. They are no problem at all. The hotel staff are formally polite and helpful.
I was very pleased with the value of the hotel, and had no problems. However, next time I come to Naples, it looks like I'll have to use a hotel where smoking is officially allowed.
Room Tip: Book an outside room to listen to the city, knowing when you shut the window, the noise is gone. Bu...
