“Comfortable apartment suites, secure parking and excellent service... too bad its in Naples!”
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Villa Medici as part of our honeymoon (a self-directed driving trip around Italy). The good points included excellent service, a complimentary bottle of champagne in our room to celebrate our honeymoon, a clean and comfortable (although older renovation) apartment suite, good water pressure in the shower, two small flat-screen TVs one with DVD player, secure off-street parking, and close proximity to the train station. The bad points included the hotel's location on a busy run-down street in a less-than-picturesque neighbourhood, and a strong smell of smoke in our room when we arrived. Occassionally we could feel the rumble of a passing train, but noise was not really an issue, especially when we closed the automatic window shutters at night. There were a number of broken light bulbs in our room, although I'm sure if we had actually mentioned this to reception they would have fixed it promptly. The reception staff we dealt with spoke English quite well and were very friendly. They helped us with driving and walking directions, and went to a great deal of trouble to assist us in ordering pizza over the phone from a local take-away, which they arranged to have delivered direct to our room (it was delicious!). We used the hotel as a base for travel in and around Naples (including driving the Amalfi coast), and it was sufficient for this purpose, although traffic around the hotel and the surrounding area was chaotic, and the train stations near the hotel were dark and dirty. As a side note, we found Naples to be a grotty city surrounded by lots and lots of slummy apartment buildings (Rome, Venice and Florence are MUCH nicer cities). Naples was definitely the low point of our trip, and I would not reccommend going there if you're on a romantic holiday (you would be better off staying somewhere along the Amalfi coast, its amazing!). But, if you must go to Naples, staying at the Hotel Villa Medici would be a good choice.
