“Had a great week at Villa Sarah”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2007

My wife and I spent a week staying at Villa Sarah this June. We did not read any reviews up front, but booked based solely on the basis of what we could figure out from the hotel's website. By coincidence, I came to read the reviews of Villa Sarah on tripadvisor. It is quite surprising to see some of the negative reviews this hotel has been getting, so I figured I'd add some words about my own experience.

Location: Yes it is outside the Capri city center. It is not 2 miles/3,2 km like some reviewers have written. It is around 400 meters. (If you go 3,2 km in almost any direction from the Piazetta, you will fall off the island, check any map you'd like.) It is true that the last 150 meters is uphill. It is a great location for exploring the eastern part of the island, including the Villa Jovis.
There entire eastern part of the island is car-free, so the location of the hotel has the benefit of being very calm and quiet. Thankfully, you can not even hear the almost comically kitsch music from the bar at the JW Marriott just down the road.

Beaches: Capri has only one traditional beach, in Marina Piccola. Apart from that, hanging out by the sea means either renting a boat or going to one of the seaside bathing establishments. We spent every day at Fontellina (expect to spend around €100/day incl lunch), which is a 15-20 minute walk downhill (very steep) from Villa Sarah. Walking back up is exercise, but if you are not so inclined they run a boat service to Marina Piccola, from where you can grab a cab or the bus. Villa Sarah has a very nice small pool area, but if you're looking for a poolside vacation, you should look elsewhere.

Hotel standard: The hotel is simply furnished but is kept immaculately clean and well maintained. Our upper floor sea view room (€200) was OK sized, had TV and minibar and a nice outdoor space. If you're looking for posh surroundings and expensive fittings, you are probably better off elsewhere.
Be advised that almost any hotel located near Marina Piccolo will lie in the shade from around 3-4PM, due to the steep hill to the west. This is not a problem for hotels located on the top of the island, like Villa Sarah.

Hotel service: The breakfast is served poolside or indoors, and is quite alright. They also have a limited menu during the daytime, which in our experience offered simple but well made food at OK prices.

In our experience, the criticism about the hotel staff is totally uncalled for. We relied on the staff for almost everything from laundry, ironing, restaurant reservations and advise on what to do and where to go. They were always 100% helpful and polite.

“Great hotel away from Piazzetta”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2007

My wife and I stayed here in early September of 2007 and it was truly a great place to stay in Capri.

The hotel is set up a hill nicely tucked away from the tourist-packed overpriced Piazzetta. Some previous posts have stated that the walk to town is extremely far. I have to disagree. Though steep, the walk is not very long (maybe 5 minutes at a regular stroll).

The hotel owners are extremely friendly and will recommend some phenomenal family-owned restaurants. The pool at the hotel is great. If I have one complaint it is that the rooms were quite small. For the price though, you really can't ask for much more.

“Pleasant experience”

I stayed at the villa sarah back in 2003, and had a very nice experience. The staff were helpful, gave me advice on free private beaches to visit, and called in an electrician when my air conditioning broke during my stay (it was during a particularly bad heat wave). Yes, there is a long walk to get to the hotel but if your suitcase has wheels and you are in decent enough shape, it shouldn't be a problem. Stop along the way and admire the scenery! The walk to and from town was wonderful - I liked that the hotel was 'away from it all' as it assured me of a good nights' sleep! For the price, this was certainly worth every Euro...

“Wonderful, friendly, clean, and loved the hotel villa sarah”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2006

I can't believe that this hotel gets such bad reviews. In our experience the room was clean, with our own balcony overlooking the hotel's private gardens. As this hotel is on Capri, one of the most beautiful (and expensive islands in Europe), the 200 euros per night for such a well situated, peaceful, and well attended stay, including breakfast, was excellent value for a family of 4.

Some reviews say it is not well communicated, but as cars are not allowed on most of the island, if you cannot manage the 10 minute walk from the central piazza then maybe you should stay at home. Our daughters are 8 and 6, and they both walked this route several times each day without any problem.

If you like walking, it is perfectly situated to walk to the Arco Natural, and the Villa Jovis.

If you like to save money and eat a sandwich on one of the wonderful walks around the area, it is 2 minutes away from the only supermarket that we could find on the island (and believe me, to eat out on Capri can be very expensive).

And finally, if you want to pay more to sleep and eat, Capri has many hotels for the rich and famous to waste their money.. However, we felt that this hotel deserved 4 stars, and was by far the best value for money that we had on our trip to the South of Italy. It is well run, by a wonderful family who always went out of their way to help us. Even though we tried to practise Italian, they would always explain things in English to make sure that we had understood.

I don't know when we will return to Capri, but when we do we will certainly be staying at the Villa Sarah again.

  • Liked — Quiet location near to wonderful scenery
  • Disliked — Too cold in October to use pool
  • Tips/Secrets — It is near local supermarket (very rare on Capri) for making picnic for walks, etc

“Great Experience at Villa Sarah”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2006

Spent a week in Capri for friends 40th birthday. They are 5 year regulars of Capri (sophisticated travelers) and know the island well, giving our group a choice of their reccomended top, middle, and low cost options. Villa Sarah was the low cost option other than staying in Ana Capri. First, I'd rate the time from the piazza at more like 10 minutes of a beautiful walk. Second, all of Capri is a massive walk/climb unless you plan nothing more than sitting in the piazza (get in shape or stay home). Right off the ferry immediately found the Villa Sarah bag rep, arrived to bags at the hotel lobby. Beautiful grounds, a very slick new pool, and nice, very clean, Capri style room with balcony and ocean view as requested. Breakfast much more substantial than expected and included made to order capuccinos or regular pot of coffee and hot milk on the table. Also serve pizzas, panninis, etc. out of their kitchen. Nice bar and home-made white wine was reportedly very nice. Great service. Lent beach towels when requested, met at door with towles when arriving one day after being caught in a downpour, staff checked with others of our group as to whether to risk waking us to clean our room after a late nighter (definitly "no"). Was little aprehensive reading some of these reviews before booking, but we'll be back.
