We stayed here in late August for 10 nights. We had read mixed reviews but more good than bad so decided to book.It was our fist time to Sorrento & my parents first time to Italy. We were pleasantly suprised. When we arrived in Marina Grande the Thomson rep that travelled from the airport with us called the hotel & a porter came & picked up our luggage which was good because it was very hot to be pulling cases!
The staff are very friendly & we had asked for adjoining rooms which we got.We paid for a sea vie which is a must. The rooms were very clean & the maid came in on a daily basis & tidied up.The sheets were changed every other day & towels every day if you wanted them to be.
Yes the outside did look a bit tired but it was clean & tidy inside & out.
The food was excellent.Breakfast was varied & plentiful. Evening meal was a 3 course meal, always hot & we never had a disapointing meal. The menu was never the same for the 10 days we were there.Gala & buffet night are really good, the mainchf comes out to say intorduce hiself & on buffet night he carves the meat. The staff are hard working & are always there if you need them.Don't be put off by the Maitre'd he is a really nice man & will have a laugh he just likes his restaurant to run well, 1 review said that they saw the staff covering tea stains with mugs i never saw this once & was shocked because the Maitre'd liked the cutlery straight & in order so i can't see how he would have let that happen.
The swimming pool is nice & always clean. It is mostly covered by balconies but it was so hot this wasn't a problem. The only thing i would say is that sun loungers would be better than the chairs they have, they are okay but it is nice to lay down but the deck was lovely to sit on although the sun does dissappear by 3.15pm but it's still warm & i never wore a sleeves for the whole holiday!! The snack bar is also very good & the barmen are really nice & friendly.
Our rep Mark was really nice & was in the hotel alot.He does a walk of Sorrento which we did,it's definitley worth it because you get your bearings & it's free!! He also did a quiz night which was really good.
If you are going to eat in one of the restaurants in Marina Grande try Di leva it's run by sisters & the fish & chips is to die for!!
We used to catch the bus into town most nights, the walk gets a bit too much if youv'e done it during the day(depending on how fit you are) we always walked back though! In town we ate in La fenice which is overpriced & overated. If you do the Sorrento walk mark will take you here don't be fooled. We also ate in La Favorita which is like a massive garden, lovely food but lots of bugs flying around because of the plants & trees but we would eat here again. For a drink go to the English Inn we drank here most nights,Luigi is soooooo funny & Raphaelle is a really nice man & also likes a giggle.
.We also did Pompeii & Herculanium using the local train,it's cheaper than the Thomson trips & we liked the fact we could leave when we wanted because it was so hot.
We also hired a car & drove the Amalfi drive.Only do this if you are very brave, when we took our car back there was a couple who only had their car for 2 hours because they couldn't handle the stress, luckily my partner is an excellent driver but you have to have eyes everywhere. We also climbed Mount Vesuvius it was hard going but the view is definitley worth it.
We will definitley go back to Sorrento & stay at the Hotel Admiral it's a hidden gem.
Room Tip: book a oom with a full sea view. It is a must.
