“Beautiful Sorrento, but not beautiful hotel”

We went to Italy in March 2011 and stayed at the Hotel Residence Miramare for three nights. After our stay at Bettoja Relais Certosa in Florence (which was magical not because we got the best hotel, but the best and most honest and friendly service from the staff..they became our family), we were disappointed by much at the Miramar. For one, I had communicated with the manager beforehand (via email) to ensure that everything would be as stated on our Expedia purchase (this included an APARTMENT with a sea view room, a kitchenette with a small eating area, etc). This was our first time to travel out of the US, so you can imagine our jitters (there were a total of 6 of us traveling together). Via email, the manager ensured that all details were correct. However, when we arrived, I found myself in a room with a sea view, yes, but definitely no kitchen (we got a little corner kitchenette which was basically a sink, mini fridge, and shelves with plates) or living room as advertised on Expedia. Ironically, my friend, who got just a standard room, got the little kitchen with a dining area. With all this said, however, the manager did say that she would switch us to a better room, but was cold and not apologetic at all. Whatever miscommunication there was between Expedia and the hotel should not have been passed down to us in such a cold manner. We decided to just stay in our dingy room (which had old, dingy, and stale bed sheets, flooring, EVERYTHING) to be close to our friends and to make the best experience or lemonade out of the lemons we received. I NEVER complain and am usually very understanding, but I can not believe how cold the staff were and how dingy the hotel is for a four star hotel. Positive reviews about this hotel astound me and as you can see, after seven months, I am finally writing a review. Sorrento itself, however, is beautiful and breathtaking. When you walk out of the hotel (which is located at a very sharp and dangerous turn in the road), all of the frustration is alleviated by the beauty of Sorrento itself. Perhaps this is why there are so many positive reviews because you can not go wrong when you are outside in Sorrento. However, since this is the case, you might as well just stay in a cheaper hotel because it's the city itself that will grab you in. Outside of the hotel, we met wonderful people and everywhere we ate and shopped brought the feelings of home and family to us. Restuarant owners came out to greet us and brought out complimentary drinks and desserts, and on the streets, we saw different vendors that we bought from walking with their families. Some waved to show they remembered us, others stopped to introduce their families, and one even walked around with us and introduced us to all of his friends in different shops. And this was NOT because we spent extravagant amounts of money...this is just how MOST of the people in Sorrento are. I recommend Sorrento highly, but definitely not the hotel. The stars are for the people and the city, not the hotel itself. We are going back to Sorrento for a destination wedding in 2013 and will be looking for another hotel to stay out. We are looking at some 5 star hotels, so if anyone can recommend a friendly hotel, please let me know. We don't mind the walk from the hill to the town center. That was part of the fun and beauty.
Anyhow, when I read the negative review about the "Bates" and creepy feeling of this hotel, I related entirely and had to put my two sense in. The staff need to learn how to be more genuine and friendly. When your business is based upon serving thosed from other countries, it would be nice to make them feel at home. It makes all the difference. Have fun in Sorrento, everyone. Love, love, loves it!!!

Dear madam
I am very disappointed about your review.
First of all I would like to inform you that all our rooms have kitchenette and not kitchen and they are all the same size: two ring hob, one sink, microwave, minifridge and some utensils to use it. It is clearly written everywhere that is a kithcen corner and you cannot expect a full equipped kitchen. The dining area, a table with chairs is present in all the rooms and one bedroom apartments.
Also I would like to underline that you reseved a room with sea view and balcony, our superior studio for 2 persons and one child, at a very low price, and you arrived in 4, 3 adults and one child. The very dingy thing is that you did not book it: you expected a room for 4 persons as our one bedroom apartement that I also offered you without extra charge; the one bedroom apartment has the living room as clearly described on our pages on internet.
I apologize if I seamed to be cold to you but I am not like this with guests usually, I was cold because you did not registred the 4th person the arrival day and I was surprised to see more people then the expected... I work in hotel from many years, and not only in this one, and if my attitude was to be cold with the gusts I am sure I could not work anymore in a front office.
At the end you did not even paid the supplement of the 4th persons and this was an extras bonus that you did not mention.
I hope that you will have a nice stay in 2013 in Sorrento and make sure that you book a room for the exact person which are travelling! My best regards

“Spacious comfort with breathtaking views”

We stayed at the Miramare Residence for 2 days in early November and upgraded to a sea view room. First off, we were very impressed with the large size of the rooms. Every room also has a kichenette which should be very convenient for families. The balcony leading off our room was fantastic. The floors are beautifully tiled, the internet free, the sheets and bathroom spacious and clean, the breakfast adequate and the distance from town and beach very convenient. The hotel staff was very friendly and obliging. The multilevel architecture of the hotel with it's many terraces offers a photographer beautiful views of the breathtaking vistas. Yes, the exit to the road from the parking is challenging, but with patience it's fine..

“Classic Italian Comfort”

Our family of four stayed at the Miramare 4 nights during our summer tour of Italy. Very impressed with attentive and pleasant staff. Appreciated the retro-style rooms, high quality linens, and clean clean clean everywhere--extremely well maintained by people who take pride. We parked the car and walked down to town everyday -- Sorrento was magic -- a high point of our trip. Few highlights -- took the train and visited Pompeii; the evening promenade and ice-cream in Sorrento; dinner at il Buffalito and picking up some souvenirs at their gift shop; cooling off in the hotel pool during the hot days. Highly recommended

“Beautiful view, room not quite as beautiful....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We stayed at the Miramare for 4 nights for what should have been the apex of our trip to Italy. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and we were forced to ditch our plans to lounge by the pool and be more active.
The hotel is located on the hillside with stunning views of the bay, and, as others have mentioned, the infamous "corner of death" does seem scary to walk through (we didn’t have to as we took our car every time we went down to Sorrento).
The room we stayed at was located outside of the main building, had a nice terrace and partial views of the bay. The room itself was kind of disappointing, small, dark and old looking design.
Breakfast was minimal and could definitely improve.
All in all not terrible stay but definitely not 4 stars.

“comfortable Miramare”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

We have just returned from our 7 day holiday at the Miramare and found the hotel to be comfortable, calm and relaxing. We noticed that previous residents were intimidated by the road approaching the hotel and whilst we agree that it might not be ideal for families with children/the less mobile, we found that a little patience was all that was needed before reaching the footpath situated a few yards along the road across from the hotel entrance- at least that was the case in mid-October!
Our room (No. 203) was pleasant with superb views across the sea to Naples and whilst we found breakfast a bit repetitive (albeit served by lovely, helpful staff) we simply remedied this by cooking eggs etc in our room on a couple of mornings. Would certainly visit again.

Room Tip: We had a choice between a 'garden apartment' and a hotel room with a 'wonderful sea view...
