“Expect Grace Kelly!”

The hotel is truly from an era of luxury and elegance. We were able to book a wonderful luxury room in this hotel, including overlooking the water and Vesuvius, without breaking the bank. And it was worth it. The multi-floor descent in the hotel's own elevator to the hotel's own private wharf was an experience in itself. The breakfast in the morning would have been worth the price. Luxury!! Enjoy it!!

“Beware if you go with a tour group.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

If you are booking this place on your own make sure to request a full water front view room (probably outrageous but the only way to comfortably stay here). We went with a tour group so we were in the standard rooms which were street side with no view what so ever. It was October so the A/C had been turned off for the season so we had to leave the windows open for any ventilation which made it impossible to close out the street noise which although that portion of the street is closed to vehicles for a portion of the night, when the people walk by after tipping a few back the noise it amplified into the rooms -- and the bus park is directly accross the street so you have the commercial traffic to listen to as well. The whole hotel is decorated with old, dated and in some cases dilapitaed furnishings. The first room I was taken to smelled so badly of mold I coulen't even walk in. They took me to 3 other rooms before I found one I could stand and it was so small the doors on the dresser and closet hit the bed when I opened them. The front desk staff was hopeless, the wifi only works well in thier lobby area and even that was sketchy. I realize space is at a premium in Italy but the corner shower in the bathroom was so small I had to leave the doors open to wash my hair. I'm not a big person -- average size at best -- I left the bathroom stool next to the shower so I could prop up my foot to shave my legs because I couldn't bend down it was so tight. The breakfast "buffet" was typical, breads, cured meat and cheese and the standard scrambled eggs fruite yougut etc., and INSTANT coffee in a large urn -- seriously if you are going to make gallons of coffe the least you can do is use a perculator but instant coffee really? They would make you a cappuccino which is fine if you don't know the difference but for my experience they were a shoddy excuse for a latte and even shoddier quality of coffee. We ate dinner here twice as part of the tour and both meals were not only ice cold but over cooked and tasteless. Thank god for the bread or I would have gone to bed hungry. One good thing was the white russian's at the bar that Antonio made -- with real whip cream, and the sunset from the deck was nice otherwise, there has to be better places to stay. Don't waste your money.

Room Tip: Book on your own and insist on full water view.

“great view when you are allowed to see it”

stayed 5 nights recently at this well located hotel specifically for the views and sunsets from the terrace area by recommendation from a friend. The reception staff were very helpful and friendly and our room had great views and but the decor was dated and tired, some light fittings were missing and a bedside lamp somehow disappeared on our second night. We dined at the hotel on the first night after a long journey from Belgium, big mistake , the food was very ordinary. Our major disappointment was limited access to the beautiful terrace area to watch the sunsets. On three of the nights they had weddings there and left paying guests with a small area that didn't have a view of the sunset and had limited waiter service. On top of this the wedding guests also came into this area which was very annoying.I did complain to management who didn't really care, their only comment was that "you can't complain we upgraded your room".We had paid for a suite with sea views and they did give us what they call an executive suite which was very large but there was only the two of us we didn't want that room ,we wanted the views from the terrace.Overall not up to standard, they should decide if they want to be an international standard hotel or a reception venue, you can't be both.

Room Tip: make sure you get what you pay for.

“Great location and views, otherwise just ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

The hotel is located very close to the center of town. Our room was very nice with ample space and with a large bathroom. The air conditioner worked well and the room had a safe.
The view from our room overlooked the bay and was fantastic as was the view from the deck located at street level.

Sitting on the deck and having an afternoon cocktail is lovely.....with a fantastic view and pretty flowers. There are ample seats and very well spaced, the deck is quite large and a very nice atmosphere.

The pool is located down many steps or by elevator and a long tunnel. One really can't complain about getting to the pool as this is Sorrento. This is the character of the area, and actually part of what makes it so special. The pool deck also has an outstanding view overlooking the bay.

There is a very strict rule that you must wear a "bonnet" in order to enter the pool water, and this includes even standing on the steps to cool off by getting your feet wet. This rule is for all unless your head is shaved. If you don't have a "bonnet" the attendent will sell you one for 3 euros. This annoyed us. I noticed that some guest would bring the plastic shower cap from the room and use this as a bonnet which seems to be allowed. We paid the 3 euros because making our way back to the room to get the plastic shower cap was way too much trouble.

The pool attendant comes up to each guest immediately to let them know about the bonnet rule and that they must take a shower. My husband put his foot in the water to test the temperature and he reminded him again to take a shower. The attendent also tells many of the guest immediately that they must remove their shoes. Watching this we never really understood what kind of shoes were allowed and which weren't, but none the less we were somewhat entertained by trying to figure it out.

There are signs that there is one pool towel per guest per day. The attendant has them hidden in a cabana and will get one for you.

You can also swim in the sea which is a few more steps down to the next level. We didn't swim there since it is located across from the ferry dock and we were put off by the idea of the fumes and oils of all the large boats coming in and out. However we spoke with and watched many people who enjoyed very much swimming in the bay and laying out on the chairs located on a deck out on the water.

We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Neither meal was memorable except that it was nice to eat outdoors.

There is an extra charge to get onto the internet. AND you need to be within several feet of the front desk to get on. You cannot get on in your room.

Overall we did not get a feeling of great service at this hotel. The dining staff was not friendly or attentive. The staff at the front desk was polite and willing to help if asked a question.

“Totally overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I just don't understand why people are willing to spend 250 euros a night for that "palace" which offers the services of a 3 stars hotel. Really, it could be a beautiful place, but the furniture of the room (we had a room with a view) and the bathroom have not been renovated since the 50's I guess, the breakfast was poor, the staff was smily but not at all helpful. There's a pool in the shade and access to the bay (there's no beach in sorrento - which is by the way a nice and charming town - but you can swim by the marina). The view of the bay is nice but it is a pale beauty comparing with Amalfi, Positano or Ravello. If we'd knew, we would rather rent a boat to visit the coast. In conclusion: this hotel is totally overpriced.
