My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights in Early October. In short, the place is a gem. I’m not sure I agree with its 5 star ranking but it was one of my most enjoyable hotel experiences in Italy.
The hotel is a converted 12th century convent done over in modernist style. It’s a bit overdone for my tastes but the charm of the original architecture manages to shines through. As with all old buildings, you have to be prepared to be flexible. For example, the main entrance to the hotel is carved out of a cliff face. I drove past it three times before finding it. And never just stride through the front doors of the lobby. That will land you in the middle of Amalfi’s busiest road. Getting to reception requires a short ride in one elevator, a short walk down a hall and a short ride in another elevator. When we arrived someone thankfully came to escort us, otherwise I’m sure we would be walking the halls like some phantom couple. Wifi in the rooms is a non starter owing to the original heavy duty construction. Wifi is available in the lobby but it took a while every day to determine where the gods of technology would allow you to pick up service. Thankfully, the bar is nearby!
The rooms are large and comfortable. Appointments are a bit sparse (again modernism rears its ugly head). Hanging closet space is at a bit of a premium so make sure that you ask for a suitcase frame for each person in the room. The view has to be one of the best in Amalfi (spend the extra money for an ocean front balcony). Even though it is on the outskirts of town, the hotel provides easy access to the Amalfi’s port area and the main piazza (By the way, you have to be in reasonable shape to navigate the footpaths from the hotel to town. Certainly not recommended for older guests).
We found the staff to be friendly, accommodating and happy to share their knowledge of local activities and destinations. The buffet breakfast gets a solid 7 out of 10 but the view from the dining area (especially the balcony) bumps it up to a 9.
As I said, we stayed here Early October. I just wonder how well the facilities (pool area, parking) would hold up against the summer crowds???
