“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Stayed for the New Year Eve in #213 in the hotel. We asked for a room with a view and got a patch of sky and possibility to look at the street over a ledge probably used in summer for patio section of the lower floor. Otherwise we were seeing the wall of the adjacent building. Still privacy was at a good level, as the window position did not allow for anyone peeking in. Strangely, there were 3 sets of curtains, which cleaning staff thought should be always shut and we found them pulled together each time we came back to the room. They were absolutely no worry, apart from the fact that they have been spayed with some sort of air freshener that smelled like insect repellent. Not putrid, but ostentatious.
Generally, the room was pretty small, yet nice and tidy, or at least we managed to keep it tidy with the joint efforts of both us and hotel cleaning staff. They did a great job, indeed, cleaning it, supplying shampoos, toilet paper, making beds, changing towels. They were so eager and enthusiastic in changing towels that they changed my own purple towel in the cleaning frenzy and never replaced it back. I am positive that it stands out among their white clean towels, but hey, such is life. Sometimes you steal something from the minibar, sometimes the minibar steals something from you. Not that we used the minibar, but we were charged €6 for it. We made an objection and they reimbursed them instantly.
Room had a big double bed, king sized, pillows were kind of long and flat, too low for my taste but that is generally the rule for all hotels in Europe. AC was strong and effective, yet quiet and unnoticeable. Room did not contain any traces of cigarette smell, which was indeed very pleasant and I am grateful to the hotel for that.
A drawback is that the room had only one chair, and there were no kettle. Not that there was much place in it where to put a second chair, or a kettle, but still I find it worth noting as we were a couple staying there.
Bathroom was nice. I like the stone tiles, the big sink and mirror, and that red-light heating bulb on the ceiling, the hair drier was also nice addition to the overall comfortability ratio of the bathroom. The only one notion I had spoiling the otherwise joyful experience of taking a shower there was the constant fluctuations in hot water. Sometimes it was too hot, then it goes too cold, then too hot again. I am not a capricious person, and I speak about big amplitude in water temperatures - e.g. water going up to 50C then down to 20C.
Also, someone who was using the bathroom before us, probably thought that the hanging ceiling was a good place to hide valuables and had shifted the overhead panels leaving an unpleasant crack in the ceiling. I noticed it never got fixed. Strange why someone used this as there were a safe deposit box in the wardrobe, I think we were offered €5 for using it.
Probably a good idea is that the hotel allows it being used for free.
All in all - pretty enjoyable nice hotel where you can comfortably, and yet not overly expensive, crash for the night. Location is next to perfect, and close to the Xativa metro stop and 25 min away from the airport.

Room Tip: #213 - rather quiet. Choose rooms facing back to enjoy better silence during the night.

“Good location, good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

This hotel was pretty good. The room and bathroom were very clean and beds were comfortable (we had two single beds even though we'd booked a double room). We had a room on the top floor and it had a huge terrace complete with lounge chairs - great for enjoying the sun.

I can't comment on the breakfast as we had to leave before the time it started.

The location of the hotel was good, about a 20 minute walk from the train station and it was on a side street of what seemed to be a main road. It was close to supermarkets, restaurants and shopping.

I'd recommend this hotel to any type of traveler.

“GOOD VALUE. ENTERTAINING LOCATION”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

The hotel is well located and a short-walk to the buses that will take you to the museums and aquariums. It is a safe area. It is just an average hotel, not outstanding.

“Value and comfort in an excellent, central location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

We selected the Catalonia Excelsior due to its proximity to the train station(s) and its central location in the heart of Valencia for our three night stay. During our visit this hotel's location was indeed a big plus as it is within an easy and short walk to the Mercado Central, all of the central plazas, and the main shopping and dining strips in Valencia. The walk to/from the Estacio del Nord (add five minutes to the newer Estacio Joaquin Sorolla via free bus shuttle) is less than 10 minutes which made our transportation connections super easy. The long park that winds through the city (Jardines de Turia) is also not too far away; 10-15 minutes from the Catalonia Excelsior. We caught the 95 bus line there near the Plaza de America to visit the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de Las Artes y Las Ciencias).

Based on our room rate, we were expecting fairly basic, functional accommodations. Our sixth floor room exceeded our expectations in many ways. The bathroom was large with a nice shower (with excellent water pressure). The air conditioning worked almost too well as we woke up one morning to a chilly room, hiding under the covers. After pulling back a curtain in the corner we made the excellent discovery that we had our own private roof terrace with a table, chairs, and views of the Valencia skyline. The bed was on the firm side, but large and comfortable. We liked that they had extra pillows in the closet that were flatter than those on the bed for those of us who prefer them. The free WiFi connection in the room was consistent and worked well (password is available at the front desk). The only minor inconvenience we experienced with the room was the lack of an iron and ironing board. Perhaps we could have requested them but we never bothered to ask.

The staff were pleasant, courteous, and helpful. Communication in English was not a problem and they were quite patient with my horrible, broken Spanish. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a stay in Valencia and would be more than happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: If available, try to get one of the rooms on the sixth or seventh floors which have lovely, private...

“Nice hotel but cleaning needs to be improved & fee for safety deposit box a rip off”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

My wife and I stayed at the Excelsior for 2 nights. The hotel was in a good location about a 10 min walk from the main station and approx 5 mins to the main city area and a large supermarket. There were also many restaurant in close proximity.
Pros:
- The room we had was large and quite with comfortable beds (two joined together to form double) and had block out curtains which kept the room dark in the mornings.
- marble bathroom was very nice, although the toilet was poorly positioned very close to the vanity top
- aircon was very effective
- free wifi with good speed
Cons:
- Reception staff not overly friendly although the guy that checked us in was quite good
- hotel and Booking, com web sites listed a safety deposit box as one of the services in the room with no mention of a fee. When we went to store something in there the lock assembly was missing and when I checked with reception I was told there was a fee of $EU5 a day for usage of the box -AN ABSOLUTE RIP OFF!!!!
- Tiles in shower were quite dirt y(see photos) and you could easily wipe off some of the grime with a tissue
- A feed back form (detailing some of the above) was left at the hotel at checkout together with my email address, but 3 weeks has passed and no response received as yet. So much for customer care!!
