Montiboli advertises itself as a five star hotel and it does have that potential but this is a hotel that has rested on its laurels so much that it has fallen over backwards. It is not that this is an awful hotel but it does not deliver what it advertises itself as; and what you get is certainly not commensurate with what is charged.
The rooms and public areas are very pleasant and the small number of hotel staff that are there tend to be charming but the hotel is so understaffed that the service is appalling. Much of what is promised in the brochures is not actually available. There is an advertised cafe and second restaurant on the beach which is permanently closed and has apparently been for some time. The outdoor swimming pool is tiny, the claimed second outdoor pool is actually a plunge pool and the pool in the spa area was closed for much of my visit and not available for kids. The beach area, which is stony, is unattended and swamped by the next door hotel's guests. The pool side bar is rarely attended so service is haphazard and infrequent. It seems there are so few staff in the hotel that nothing works properly.
The worst feature of the hotel is the main restaurant and its food. Service here is akin to Fawlty Towers and the food is dull and more what one would expect from a English regional hotel in the 1980s than a top quality restaurant. The breakfast buffet is what I would expect from a Holiday Inn not a Relais & Château hotel. The waiters are surly and clearly overstretched while the food is mainly buffet style take it or leave it - the lunch buffet is re-hashed for dinner. You have an 1 hour slot to eat from the a la carte menu between 8.30 to 9.30 otherwise you have missed it and have to eat the buffet.
A cheese sandwich at the bar would have done credit to a motorway cafe: dry white bread, a sad piece of lettuce and a thin slither of cheese.
The hotel feels like a team of consultants have gone through every cost and stripped out staff wherever they could to save money. If I had paid half the amount for this hotel I may not feel quite so angry with the level of service I received but at the premium prices charged this can only be described as a rip off.
