“A beautiful hotel that is ruined by poor service and awful food”

Montiboli advertises itself as a five star hotel and it does have that potential but this is a hotel that has rested on its laurels so much that it has fallen over backwards. It is not that this is an awful hotel but it does not deliver what it advertises itself as; and what you get is certainly not commensurate with what is charged.

The rooms and public areas are very pleasant and the small number of hotel staff that are there tend to be charming but the hotel is so understaffed that the service is appalling. Much of what is promised in the brochures is not actually available. There is an advertised cafe and second restaurant on the beach which is permanently closed and has apparently been for some time. The outdoor swimming pool is tiny, the claimed second outdoor pool is actually a plunge pool and the pool in the spa area was closed for much of my visit and not available for kids. The beach area, which is stony, is unattended and swamped by the next door hotel's guests. The pool side bar is rarely attended so service is haphazard and infrequent. It seems there are so few staff in the hotel that nothing works properly.

The worst feature of the hotel is the main restaurant and its food. Service here is akin to Fawlty Towers and the food is dull and more what one would expect from a English regional hotel in the 1980s than a top quality restaurant. The breakfast buffet is what I would expect from a Holiday Inn not a Relais & Château hotel. The waiters are surly and clearly overstretched while the food is mainly buffet style take it or leave it - the lunch buffet is re-hashed for dinner. You have an 1 hour slot to eat from the a la carte menu between 8.30 to 9.30 otherwise you have missed it and have to eat the buffet.

A cheese sandwich at the bar would have done credit to a motorway cafe: dry white bread, a sad piece of lettuce and a thin slither of cheese.

The hotel feels like a team of consultants have gone through every cost and stripped out staff wherever they could to save money. If I had paid half the amount for this hotel I may not feel quite so angry with the level of service I received but at the premium prices charged this can only be described as a rip off.

“Theft in the Montiboli”

Be very careful with your jewelery as my wedding band was stolen from our room. I did remember seeing many "compro oro" or buy gold shops and it did cross my mind but when you are on holidays you just relax and pursume somethings are safe especially when I have been to this hotel many times in the past. Ok the problem of my ring been stolen is mine but the fact that the theft occured should be a real worry for this hotel. We did speak with the director but what can he do apart from apologise and I hope other guests will learn from my bad luck. Concerning the hotel I like it as it is close to Alicante where my wife's family live and the position is very nice but in terms of value for money I cannot recommend it and the room which we stayed in is still very tired. I did complain about grim around the pool and someone hard written into it dirty, dirty all the way round it so I informed the reception but nothing was done which sums it up really. Next time I think I will try another hotel.

Answering this critic from Mr. Robin I have to say that none of our staff is going to lose his job because of a simple ring. We have found hundreds of times all kind of jewelry in rooms after guests depart and every single thing has been returned, even money.
We have safety deposit boxes free of charge in all rooms. None of the doors in room were forced.
I have been talking to that couple and I was sorry about their lost but never accepted a theft or apologize for it. The couple notified to me that the ring was missing on saturday, before departure, but they didn't really know when it disappeared.
It is really incredible that something like this can be published in your web site giving a completely wrong image of our hotel without hearing us first.

“We did love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

The hotel was in fact the bright spot of our entire trip to Spain. Although a bit expensive, it succeded in satisfying all our preference for comfort, location and romance almost completely . It's a very specific and really nice place, very pictoresque, quiet, comfortable and friendly. We did enjoy our stay there. Let us also emphasize the friendliness and skills of the Alhambra bar staff, very creative and nice people.
The only weakness of the Montiboli is its SPA, inexepctedly scarce in options (only one sauna cabin, a few primitive showers, even not enough benches to leave our bathgowns upon, etc.) Neveretheless, the rest facilities are fab! Our verdict is: heartily recommended.

“Expensive but worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2010

We've been going to El Montiboli since 1996 -probably some 20 visits in all but didnt go last year because we were so fed up with the food - overpriced spanish haute cuisine and not the sort of meal you could eat more than once in a five day stay. We haven't been able to find a decent restaurant around locally and anyway don't want to have to drive out every night. Anyway after reading a review on here that theyve changed to a buffet we decided to give it another go.
Glad we did! It's true that the entrance is completely different but actually it is extremely attractive - if you hadn't seen the courtyard before there would be no complaints.
The old restaurant looked gorgeous but the new one could be any good modern hotel - until you look at the view out of the window - unbelievable.
The buffet is expensive 35€ for a buffet is a lot but the quality is top notch and the live kitchen has some decent quality fish and meat on offer. Service is still excellent at the top level although the lower waiters could do with some training. Wine is expensive and the bar prices make your eyes water! 9.75€ for a gin and tonic.
Breakfast is still brilliant.
We always have lunch at the beach bar owned by the hotel next door because they offer really good barbecued food(anyway even in mid june the Minarette was shut) and the main restaurant offers the same at lunch as dinner. BTW the two set menus for 50€ look absolutely mental! one is based on chocolate - every single course!
The old heated swimming pool has been revamped as well and incorporated into the spa. Free to use although they charge 5€ for obligatory rubber shoes and swimming cap. The girl did offer us a bag to take them so we could reuse them which was nice.
Although the junior suite we had was ok the bed was very hard; ( the bungalow beds used to be awful old things!) and the tv system is not very good - the Paradors' are much better.
All in all though glad we went back for another visit and will go again

5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2010

Our 2nd getaway to Montiboli and was even better than the 1st. Stunning location to relax and recharge. A garden room is a must as they have the most spectacular views. fall asleep to the sound of waves below. Food much better options than before. Buffet is excellent and we usually dislike buffets. We'll be back!
