“Smile PLEASE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

I am giving the Masa International Hotel 4 stars out of a possible 5 because I cannot fault anything except... some of the staff came across as very un-friendly.

If I return to Torrevieja next year, I WILL stay in this hotel because of the good things I will describe later, BUT it would be nice if the bar staff and waitresses were taught to SMILE when dealing with a customer.

OK, I am an annoying foreigner. I'm English. English tourists that have come before me, might not have been good ambassadors for our nation. My Spanish is not good (I know "hello" "please" and "thank you" and a few food items and can count to 10 and that's about it for now) but I was not a troublesome guest - I didn't get drunk, I didn't disturb other people or break anything, or ask for anything unreasonable. But sometimes I felt like I was being a nuisance just being there. Sometimes I stood at the bar for nearly 10 minutes before anybody came to serve me. They never said "Sorry to keep you waiting" either.
I have worked in hotels, bars and restaurants. I was taught this: "The customer is not an interruption of your work, they are the purpose of it."
I got better (enthusiastic and friendly) service at the cheap 2-star apartment in Turkey which I visited in July. Maybe "Masa" are making so much money that making guests feel valued is not so important?

NOW THE GOOD THINGS:

1) The hotel is very clean, and smells wonderful throughout

2) My room was cleaned every day, with fresh towels and linen every day.

3) The breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice (although I would expect this for 11 euros)

4) The pool area was lovely and quiet, with clean toilet facilities (but why was the pool bar shack never open?)

5) The panoramic sea-view is breathtaking

6) The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the beach, and a small selection of local shops, bars and restaurants (with smiley wait-staff)

7) There is a bus stop outside the hotel, if you wish to go into Torrevieja proper (or towards Alicante)

8) The type of guests staying at the Masa were not your British Sun-reading lager louts; there were a lot of Spanish guests, a few families with well-behaved children, and some older couples of other nationalities. Torrevieja is a low-key resort for people who want a quiet relaxing time, so if you want fishbowl cocktails and drinking competitions then it's not the place for you. I came here for the sun, and I got it!

Please, just give us a smile next time.

“A disasterous stay.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

I stayed in the Hotel Masa for six nights in early September 2011. Initally I thought the room was nice but immediately I detected a slight smell. I assumed that it was because the the room was probably closed too long. Overnight this foul pungent smell from the bathroom became stronger and woke me up early each morning because it was so strong. That morning I complained to the receptionist who said that she would tell the housekeeper. (I had a feeling that they were very aware of this problem). When the housekeeper called she brought spray bottles and cleaned around the WC bowl. To cut a long story short this smell returned, and each day I complained to the receptionists. On the third day I asked the receptionist to be changed to another room. The only bad thing about this other room was that the mattress was on a solid base and very uncomfortable. The TV had only spanish speaking stations programmed on the system. Breakfast choices were very poor and no cereals were provided. I bought a box of cornflakes but I was forbidden to use them in the breakfast room. When I checked out on my final day I expected to receive a small reduction on my bill for all my time in the smelly room. But thare wasn't and I felt that I had to ask, but a reduction was refused. Even an apology from the hotel management would have been nice.

Room Tip: I saw the inside of 201 and it exceeded the rooms I had. Generally rooms on the eastern end of the h...

I'm very sorry about the problems you had during your stay and please believe me that our main effort is to make our clients to feel at home although sometimes is out of our hands to solve all the problems.
We are all very concerned about the problem with the smell that comes from the bottom of the cliff where the hotel is situated when the wind comes strongly from the north and affects a couple of rooms of the hotel. We are taking all the necessary measures to avoid this smell trying all kind of products and I must apologize for all the inconveniences you've had.
Will be a pleasure to have the opportunity to compensate you, as you deserve, in a future visit to Torrevieja.
Yours sincerely

“VIEWS=WONDERFUL”

I stayed about three days in Torrevieja visiting some friends, and they booked me a room in this hotel, the room had such beautiful views wich I cannot describe, and the restaurant too!
It's a three stars hotel so the service is not the best i've seen but appropiate for a 3 stars. I think the food was pretty good.
The rooms were clean and tidy but not really big, and inspite of these things, the views could improve everything!!
I recommend it for spending a few days!

“very bad service”

the twinbeds in the room was so small so we almost couldn´t sleep two persons. Very bad service at the restaurant and not very friendly staff, they ignore that you would like to order something. And between 16 o´clock in the afternoon until 20.00 in the night you couldn´t order anything to eat not even a sandwich :( We order some food outside to the terass and when we got the bill they had overcharge a lot and they didn´t concern about it. A pizza a small size they chargfe 10 euro it must be the highest price in Spain and a small sandwich 8 euro. The breakfast was also very bad. Don´t go to this hotel!!!!!!

We are very sorry to see that you didn't liked our service, We apologize for the service in the bar but be sure that we do our best to avoid lak of service at any time. Regarding the price in our terrace, it is normal to charge a supplement for the service outside. In our breakfast we serve 8 different dishes of hot food including scrambled and fried eggs besides grilled vegetables, sausages, beans, bacon, grilled tomatos, ham, cheese, cured ham, spanish chorizo, six kind of fresh prepared fruits, assorted breads, croissants and at least 4 differents pastries.

“Nice Hotel, nice pool, the BEST breakfast I hever had - not good isolated”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

The Hotel is located ouside Torrevieja. So you need a car.
The have a nice view, the hotel is charming and the pool is fantastic. You can really swim in it: very big! The hotel is a little bit old, but still fine.
The rooms are spacious, with coffe/tea maker (coffe/tea for free), the balcony is not that big, but you can have a seat for two. The only one negative point is that the rooms are not goot isolated: you can easily hear what the people in the other room are saying...

BREAKFAST: in Spain it's always better to have a breakfast in a bar in the cities, so you can really enjoy the Spanish atmosphere. Because this hotel was not centrally located, we got the room with breakfast. The lady at the reception told me: don't miss it, because it's really good. I thought: a usual hotel buffet breakfast... The morning we went to the breakfast room: they have a fantastic view on the sea.. you feel like if you were in a boat! The food war really exceptional: a lot of choice of hot/cold food, a lot of fresh food like fruits (that in Spain are so nice and tasty!). I must admit, I was really impressed by the breakfast. I would suggest it to everyone.

Torrevieja: we just stop there 1 night, and we continued to Murcia. I would suggest to not stay that long in Torrevieja... max 1 or 2 days.
